How many people out there are using the M14x as their main rig?
Do you leave it on for 12+ hours a day and perform all your tasks on it?
Curious to see the answers, as this machine notably has heat issues.
-
Me, M14x is my main computer, though I never leave it 12hrs non stop, but I do have some sleep or hibernating in between which in the task manager count it up to 1 day.
The temp (CPU) in idle is between 40C - 60C, while in game (BFBC2) it climb up in between 95C - 99C and I've bought a cooler but havent delivered to me yet (Will update when I got this). For GPU, it sit between 30C - 40C idle, between 60C - 75C while in game.
Here is my thread about the CPU heating issue: Two Question on M14x -
It will be mine until a couple years, when I build a desktop... Aren't your temps a little high on the CPU CGSDR?
-
I've never owned a laptop. I'm used to leaving my PC on for 12 hours a day. If this is a problem with laptops, especially the m14x because of it's heat issues, then I need to go another direction. -
Well the heat cause the problem only when you in game, if you just performing normal task like web browsing, emailing, or other stuff that isnt demanding much of the CPU/GPU power like games or video/photo editing stuff, then it wont be any issue.
Beside this is my first laptop as well as a true computer purposing for gaming. -
Jruss i dont think that you will game all this time, so your cpu will be on speed step and using integraded graphics and teh temps will be fine.
but for main computer i think something bigger would be nice! -
And no, I won't be gaming for 12 hours each day. My desktop runs for about 5 hours a day during the week and 12 hours each day on the weekend. While not all of that time is spent gaming, the majority definitely is.
Also I should note that I don't play any games that really push the CPU too hard. We're talking World of Warcraft and maybe some Sc2. -
well i used mine for 12p~1pm to 12~1 am this summer and it was fine,
it is my main rig,
temps: right now, 50°C using it for 2 hours.
gaming: ~90°C. -
-
It's my only computer and yes I use it for movies, gaming, Internet, homework, etc.
-
I have left mine on for more than 12 hours straight and it had no overheating issues at all. While gaming my max temp is right around 76 C without a cooling pad. It is my main rig and game on it probable 3-4 hours at a time but i don't do it everyday.
-
Ive left mine on 3 days straight elevated with no cooler and it never even felt that hot. It is 100% my main computer
(Usually downloading stuff overnight, then gaming all day during the day) -
It's my main computer. I almost never turn it off, just put it to sleep on nights.
When surfing it's doesn't go over 50°c, when gaming 80°c tops. -
-
After just playing some MoH Multiplayer my GPU temp was 60 degrees and CPU was 83
-
It is my main work computer and my main home computer. I don't have any heat issues and it's on all but the time is take me to drive to and from work. I have Vostro and Latitude laptops that get just as hot.

I was...the screen is dead and sent to dell for repair.
-
It might have to do with the weather. It's winter here and some days are pretty damn cold. -
Main and only notebook here
-
Just got mine the other day. It will replace my G71X as my main computer.
-
i use mine all the time. never leave it on for that long but i do game, surf, watch vids etc on it.
havent got the rom for a desktop and with 2 kids they would be touching trying to plug stuff into it. -
its my main machine. besides that only a ipad for surfing etc.. works like a charm.

After reading alot of forums, a guy replied to me who was some type of notebook IT consultant. He told me there's no issue with running games on a laptop, as most modern laptops will run games fine. The issue, he said, was with overheating from gaming for hours on end.
This threat of overheating and burning a laptop up is really driving away from a laptop all together. I regularly game for hours straight, and on weekends I have WoW or SC2 open for 6-8 hours straight. Granted I'm not actually playing them the entire time, but I need a rig that will handle this and the more I read the more I'm starting to think a laptop is not the way to go. -
When you have been playing the game for 1-2 hours, the laptop has already reached it's maximum temperature. It does not really matter if you play for 4 more hours.
-
Sorry, but this doesn't seem like it could possibly be true. -
I use this as my main computer for gaming and browsing etc, i own my own shop and use this between customers and when the shop is dead, during a 12 hr shift i have it on all day and probably have games such as the witcher 2 on for 6-8 hours of the day. The only breaks it has are for pausing when i get customers in and i have also found that after an hour or 2 of gaming it reaches a reasonably high temp but it never exceeds it once it has bottled out to the top temperature, i have also found though that if you reduce some of your graphics settings just slightly so you dont really know the difference that you can drop 5-10 in temperature over prolonged gaming.
I personally wouldnt change my m14x, the fan noise doesnt bug me and the temperatures never get near to 100c so there are not really any worries about overheating.
Hope this helps your decision! -
Anyway, thank you for your reply and any other insight is certainly welcome and much appreciated. -
