I was about to buy a m14x r1 last year but after a lot of thinking about the position/factors i bought a MBP with a 6750m since the MBP was almost as powerful as the m14x and had a professional look but my heart craved m14x.

After that i found myself in need of a small sized laptop so i bought a HP Spectre and well i don't like it all that much. The new m14x checks quite a lot of boxes and i am in love with the 650m how did i miss their review in 17" HP's idk :p

I had problems figuring out how to game on my friends m14x while on battery with the whole downgrade BIOS thing. Does the m14x r2 ship with a option to play full fledged while on battery?

Since the 650m is quite frugal will it last more than the 555m on battery?

    Playing:

HoN on Max Settings and Power Consumption (Balanced) I get about 3 to 3.5 hours

DoW 2 Ultra Settings Power Consumption (Hi-performance) 2-2.5 hours

I haven't really installed anything else on it...

Gaming on the go is kind of a gimmick as today's batteries don't really have the power to supply both the graphics card and processor at full load. I suspect that with optimus the graphics card will not turn on while on battery (Just like the m14x r1). The MBP will prob be similar if it runs optimus, and be wayy more expensive. :p

You can play BF3 on battery. I don't know for how long though, as I didn't measure it yet.

You may need to change the power setting a bit. The cooling fans run on passive not active while on battery. And if you set the cpu to 99% power the turbo wont kick in, that saves power and you wont see your fps drop at all.
