I was just wondering if anyone had an M14x with the 720p screen and could let me know how it is?

720p will be nice for gaming since it is lower resolution but in reality I would want the higher resolution for detail when working with graphics, or desktop real estate space to work with multiple windows. Other users have compared the contrast and brightness and the 900p wins. This is the description of the 900p on the service tag / build list, "Module,Liquid Crystal Display,14HD+,FWLED,True Life,SAMSNG" . Don't you want a TRUELIFE SAMSUNG 900p display???

When buying an Alienware the only thing I spend money on is Processor, Display, and video card. Here look at how much Amazon charges for 16gb worth of ram compared to alienware. Save your money on certain upgrades but splurge on the other items mentioned. Upgrading the display down the road is going to cost 2 or 3x the price upfront. Processor and video card are soldered on to my knowledge to those would be impossible to DIY without complete motherboard replacement.

I have it on mine and I am happy with it. I had the R1 m11x prior to this, so I don't mind at all. I can always stick it on my Samsung flatscreen with HDMI if I'm desparate for some cinematic movie quality.

I have my m14 with 900p but my sister has an inspiron 14z (14inch same as m14x) 720p and it's like night and day :) everything looks so much better and you can see more things on one screen (web pages, word documents,...). but the 720p is not too bad if you don't use your laptop for other things a lot (just gaming)

I have it on mine and it's just perfect on this machine, especially if you mostly use it for gaming. ;)

I have both screens. I bought an outlet M14x nine months ago to upgrade from an M11x that was getting too hard for me to see (my issue, not the laptop's). I got the 1366x768 because I didn't need the extra resolution and it was cheaper. Besides playing games, I also use the laptop on vacation to review the pictures I take. I found that with this screen, I was always tilting it back an forth because I couldn't find a screen angle that would display the pictures correctly from top to bottom.

I got so frustrated on vacation last month that when I saw outlet laptops were 25% off, I ordered one with the better screen. Comparing both, here's what I found. For my desktop background, I have solid black. When I view the desktop on the 1600x900 screen, it's all black like it's supposed to be. When I view it on the 1366x768 screen, it's not all black, it looks like the back light is beeding through on the top and bottom. There's just a narrow band of dark black through the middle. That's why everyone complains about it looking washed out, it's because black isn't really black.

Thanks for the help everyone! One other question: How big of a difference is there between the i5 and lowest i7?

Primarily for gaming? Almost no difference at all. I would actually recommend getting the i5 if you are just going to be gaming and saving that extra cash in your pocket or using it to splurge on an SSD. If you are going to be doing video editing, then I would definitely recommend that i7QM. Even with hyper threading, the i5 just isn't that great for video editing compared to the i5.

But you really will not notice a sizeable difference in frames on an i7 over an i5.

It is definitely worth to get the upgraded one, I've had both of them running in front of me at the same time and my partner Pardo and I realized that if you don't get that upgrade you won't be happy with it. I've also had customers who have had to pay for the LCD later on because they did not want the upgrade at the beginning and they had to pay more for it due to that. So I'll just get the upgraded one. If you need any technical spec or pricing you can send us an e-mail to [email protected].

After reading this post...I guess I'll probably be putting in the extra 100 for a 900p. That'll probably be the only upgrade I make to save money.

If I only make one upgrade when I order my M14x it will be the screen.

You get 33% less real-estate using the 720p screen.

I can't find the older post, but read somewhere that the 720p was set at 100 and the 900p screen at 300 ...can't recall what those numbers signified (contrast? colours?).

Plus, people have reported the 720p screen to be "washed out".

The 900p is already hurting on the brightness part, I can't imagine having anything less. Personally, the 900p could use 2-3 more notches of brightness (my Lenovo Ideapad E-350 400$ laptop has better brightness :p).

That's one of the downsides with this laptop - you get an average screen for a premium price.

I wish they had RGB screens available or 95% gamuts that the Sager's offer. It would make the M14X an incredible laptop.

The screen didn't bother much at first because I gamed a great deal when I got this laptop, but when I audio/video edit for several hours, I wish I had something different to do my work on. It's great for gaming, but mediocre for productivity. This is based on the R1. I'm not sure if the R2 is using a different manufacturer or if there's multiple manufacturers like there was with the M11X (LG and Samsung I think).

I still don't regret my purchase decision, no laptop is perfect ...yet. MBP15 (Retina) is the closest to perfect, but it's the price of two M14X's ;)

I have the 720p screen and its perfectly fine. Not worth the extra $ for 900p.

    Fixt for you.

Shouldn't claim it's "not worth it" just because you use it in a different manner. It's well worth if someone is using the laptop for something other than 24/7 gaming ;)

The 720p screen hurts productivity, but not gaming.

A lower resolution will increase the time it takes to complete a project due to excessive clicking/dragging/zooming.

Its all a matter of opinion. for me personally I HATE it when I'm on a 720P screen. I pisses me off beyond all belief because I cant fit everything im looking at on a screen. my desktop is 1080p and my laptop I'm currently on is 720P. The 900P on the M14x is a requirement and I 100% would not have bought one without it. I will never buy a screen 720P and smaller again. but again its personal opinion. For me its a requirement for you maybe not so. I will go as far as saying 900p is almost too small, I almost didn't buy a 14x because it wasn't 1080P. I was looking at other lappies but I got such a good deal I couldnt pass. since It isnt my main comp and will only be used for netflix and gaming while I'm away form the home I made the sacrifice

Same. I would of never purchased the M14X if it was only a 720p screen. I've owned enough 720p laptops in my lifetime and do not plan on ever owning one again. If you're using it for productivity along with gaming, life is too short to use poor resolution and waste hours upon hours of unneeded time clicking/zooming/dragging - it's totally avoidable by simply using higher resolution.

    In terms of productivity:
720p screen = Using a toothbrush to clean your floor. Sure you saved 100$, but it will take you longer to do it.
900p screen = Using a mop to clean your floor. You paid and extra 100$, but you're doing your work at a faster rate.

    @aliendude
Good for you. Those who are serious about productivity (audio-video editing, etc.) use higher resolution screens, so it's not a "waste of money" as you previously stated. That's what I was pointing out. 33%~ of additional screen real-estate is a big deal.

I use mine for productivity primarily and have absolutely no issues and I don't waste any time at all.

Noone needs a 900p screen, it's not necessary at all.

Saying you need it for productivity is false, you're just using it wrong.

Sure you do not have issues with a 1366x768 screen, but having a lower resolution screen DOES waste time when it comes to productivity. The higher resolution, the less time you will waste on a project and the faster you will get something done, therefore having additional free time to invest into something else.

As the_ocho mentioned, have you even seen a higher resolution screen?

For someone to say "you're just using it wrong", you clearly do not value your time and/or do not take your work seriously enough to get a higher resolution. The higher resolution, the more potential hours you save clicking/dragging/zooming per project. Time is precious. You'll find that out as you get older. Why waste unneeded hours? I value my time and opted for higher resolution. It's very ignorant to assume that some us do not need a higher resolution screen just because YOU do not need a higher resolution screen. Everyone is unique and requires different accommodations. Maybe if we were all androids built on a production line and our programming was identical, then things would be different.

I'm using the laptop for gaming, coding, photoshop/illustrator, and schoolwork. So ultimately I decided to go with the 900p screen. I really appreciate all the input everyone gave. I can't wait to receive my machine :D
