I am about to get my OCZ Vertex 3 in the mail today and I have a couple questions before I begin the install:
1. Do I install the SSD where my main hard drive compartment is and put the HDD in in the optical bay with caddy?
2. Do I have to install windows 7 on the SSD with the HDD detached?
3. Before I reattach the HDD (with Windows 7 currently on it) do I have to reformat the drive?
If these questions have been answered before, please provide a link to the thread.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

1. If you want the SSD to be your main HDD with it being the boot device, you have to put it in the main compartment.
2. No you can leave your regular HDD attached assuming you have it in the caddy and the SSD in the main drive.
3. No you shouldn't have to reformat it as the main compartment should be the main HDD and the first boot device in the bios (or a cd might, but that HDD should be the first HDD). -
Thanks for the quick reply Lunatic, so do I have to do anything to my HDD (which I primarily just store documents/files) before I install my SSD?

i installed my vertex 3 today and moved the other to caddy... took all day for me to figure out how but its all done now and working. so just let me know if i can help -
Thanks Paddon I have added you on steam. I just ran some benchmarks after doing a clean install of W7 and my scores seem unusually low compared to other Vertex 3's..
Also When I run intel rapid store technology application, it says my SATA transfer rate is only 3.0gb/s rather than 6 -

You might wanna check this out

The M14x HDD port is a SATA II port from what I can tell. It supports Sata III drives but it'll run at SATA II speeds. It's a waste of money to get the SATA III drives for this laptop. You are not gonna achieve speeds higher than 250 MB read/write Approx.
EDIT: Apparently the M14x Chipset had 4 SATA ports and 2 of the are SATA III Capable... we just have to find which ports are they O_O -
In the picture Jetbo posted on that thread it shows that it does support 6.0gb/s.. -
I think its time to take my laptop apart and find out the truth behind this motherboard lol -
I wonder if tech support would be able to help with this? I've got a tech coming next week most likely, I'll be sure to ask
Installing Windows 7 on SSD
