    hello,

I have recently purchased the m14x r3 2013 model and a Samsung 840 pro ssd. I plan to install the ssd in the space of the original 750gb hdd which comes with the laptop.
Could someone please be kind to illustrate the steps I require to copy the original hdd to the samsung pro 840?

I.e. any additional software or cables required for connection to transfer OS data to the SSD from original hdd.
And the steps of how to take out the 750gb hdd in the main drive and replace it safely with the ssd.

    Kind regards,

Its called aw14 now. Unscrew the 4 screws for door. Unscrew 4 screws holding CD drive. Unscrew 3 screws holding HDD. Unplug sata cable and install ssd. Change to achi in bios. I recommend clean install. All drivers will come with the laptop but you might need to request the windows CD from dell. Otherwise you can create an Alienware respawn before you install your ssd as a clone not recommended.

    Thanks for the quick reply

Windows is optimized to run on an ssd only when you do a fresh install. It will run much more slowly if you clone it from an HDD

My Samsung 840 500gb SSD came with software and a USB 3.0 adapter. If yours didn't download free Acronis Western Digital edition and get a usb 3.0 to sata adapter/enclosure.

I just cloned my 750gb disk to the SSD and replaced it, very straight forward removal. Just unscrew bottom of laptop, remove DVD drive (pull up the connection ribbon) then just remove the old HDD and add the SDD.

I'm planning to do the same with mine.

If you have the time can you let us know your battery life with SSD and no HDD? Keen to see if it's worth the upgrade :)

    Cheers

I wouldn't recommend using cloning software as I've seen on multiple occasions people have issues down the road with their machine slowing down or windows not running right. A clean install is my recommendation, but thats just me. ;)

    My machine arrived this morning!!!!
I opted for the windows 7 premium and my system comes with the windows DVD!! :D
Then I did a clean install (not as clean as possible, I installed the drivers in random order) on my msata ssd(aftermarket)
While I was installing windows I took out the harddisk just in case something will be messed up
and everything is fine now :hi2:

Yeh will do btw ordered the samsung 840 pro 512gb. However, still waiting for the machine to be delivered and then will order the windows 7 cd aswell so it could be while. But normally i heard it increases battery by 1 hour :)

I have moved my OS to an SSD twice by cloning. No issues either time. After boot, the systems ran a LOT faster where disk access was involved.

One upgrade was a Fujitsu P770 laptop. The other was my home built I5 system using an ASUS motherboard.

Used Acronis Migrate Easy both times.

There may be issues for some, but I have not encountered them.

I second this! It's better to go fresh from HDD to SSD.

Each to their own, and this was back when such software came out so it's probably matured some, but I personally won't be trusting cloning software anytime soon. :p

So I just received my new aw14x :) I brought it 1 month way below retail price from another owner. Anyways I contacted dell regarding sending me a installation windows 8 cd.
They told me the original owner had ordered a copy for a fresh install aswell. So I contacted the original owner and asked him if he could send it to me.

The original owner replied he did the same thing but dell sent him a reinstall recovery disk, he tried to do a fresh install with it didn't work and he binned it and complained.

Now I asked dell it will cost me £20 ($40-50) to order a new windows 8 install disk, what shall I do? Order and find out its the same rubbish recovery disk?
Can't I just download or borrow a windows 8 installation disk since the serial code is inbedded in the motherboard?

I want my shiny 840 pro in my laptop /cry :(

You should be able to find a windows 8 installation disk iso online. Find and download one, and then burn it to a DVD. Then all you gotta do is run it and you should be good to go. Also note this is not illegal in anyway as you own a licience for windows 8. Hope this helps and sorry I can't link one for you, but I'm on my tablet. :(

LOL I just finished the order will dell for the original installation cd as I read your post.. I would of downloaded it without doubt lmao. O well it's going to be delivered tomorrow. :)

So to install SSD just remove old HDD stick in the new SSD. Select ACHI in bios, format SSD, pop in installation disc and install windows 8. Then stick in the alienware resources installation disk and install all drivers and stuff. Any specific order? I have 2 disks Application/Resource DVD.

Ok I received the installation disc its written Operating System on the disc media recovery for dell machines. I hope this is the right disc for a clean install once I install the SSD.

    Anyways just a few questions,

When removing the optical drive do I have to remove the ODD ribbon by lifting up the tabs with a screwdriver like the old m14x? Or can I just unscrew ODD and flip it over on to the battery?

I'm not really the best at these technical things hehe

If you are not planning to take away/replace the ODD, just unscrew it and flip it over, then you'll have access to the hdd

Ok I would like to thank everyone for helping me install my first SSD in a laptop in my life lol.
I gained a little clue from here and some videos of the old m14x how to install the SSD.

I am not sure if did the right things but once I installed the Samsung pro 840 512gb it instantly came up in bios selected boot option to ACHI. After installing Intel Rapid Storage it has a tick and says you are running maximum performance.

The 7200 rpm hdd which was installed already in the system was quite quick on boot up anyways guessing its to do with Windows 8.
Can't say it improved battery life vastly but its completely dead silent and boots slightly faster than the 7200 rpm. This was a clean install.

Thanks for all the replies and to the poor moderator who has to grant permission for my posts lol
