hey guys. So i heard a lot of people saying the m14x display doesnt look very good.... so.. i got an external display and realized that this is true.. i also found a way to make the display look much better! this made a significant difference to my display by only spending about 10 min on it! :D
The solution to improving the displays colors is to simply use the intel display control panel and to adjust the RGB levels manually. Another thing you must also do at the same time is to use windows display calibration :) using those 2 my display went from looking a bit faded to looking really colorful and much much better.. this made a significant improvement to my display and i am happier then ever :) hope this helps you guys out :) let me know if any help is needed or you guys have any questions :)
also for people complaining about clairity.. use windows cleartype to help out.. makes texts much easier on the eyes and a bit clearer :)
Also let me know if this helps you guys out :)

Another possiblity is to buy a Pantone Huey Pro for $70, it calibrates your display within minutes.

but why spend 70 when you can do it yourself? :S my method is just there to improve it without having to pay anything more :)

This is exactly what I did. I raised the color saturation to 35 (default is 0) and the brightness to 5 (default is 0). Much better. :)

I just used the colour profile at http://www.notebookcheck.net/uploads/tx_nbc2/ICC_M14X.icc in Windows, improved my colour definition. This is the ICC profile made by NBC when they did their review, using that calibration device thing. Bear in mind that this ICC profile isn't calibrated specifically to your M14x monitor and so therefore could slightly be less than the best result you would get when calibrating it yourself with the calibration device.

Ixel I have a question. How do you keep the notebookcheck icc profile loaded permanently? It looks great, but after every system restart and/or game this icc resets to default Windows icc. Then I must load it manually to get back. Do you or anyone knows a solution to my problem??

I too would like a Windows 7 step by step on this one... I can't seem to get Windows to accept the ICC file as an added profile.

This is what I am using.

Intel Graphics Control Panel (Adjusting color saturation and brightness)
    Brightness +5
    Saturation +10

nVidia Control Panel (To adjust for default color profile being too blue)
    Color channel blue
    Brightness +40% (default is 50%)
    Contrast +40% (default is 50%)

Gives a nice warm rich feel to the graphics.

Default Refresh Rate is 40Hz. Does it improve if set at 60 Hz?

Also, how do you get to NVIDIA Control Panel?
    Thanks.

for some reason it drops to 40hz, think this is fixed in later driver. I dont really have an issue with this for desktop use but others have reported screen tear when using 1080p over hdmi during video.

NV control panel is in windows 7 control panel :)

The display runs at 40Hz when on battery and 60Hz when on AC for me. I think it's related to the Intel power settings in AlienFusion.

I have had problems keeping my custom icc display profile loaded. It reverted back to default after restart, after launching intel graphics properties panel, after launching a film, game etc.

    SOLUTION:

So I once again I loaded my icc favorite custom profile in Color Management ( the notebookcheck one from M14X review http://www.notebookcheck.net/uploads/tx_nbc2/ICC_M14X.icc ), then went to start, typed msconfig.exe in search field, selected startup tab, disabled igfxpers.exe, restarted and IT FINALLY STICKS!!!. Tried launching a game, still sticks. The only time it reverts to default is by launching intel graphics properties panel.

Disabling the Intel service causes no problems.

I did everything and restarted. The color looks much better now. Thanks guys!

There's a lot of good informtion in this post and a lot of new owners of the M14x with the lower res screen, so I thought I'd bump it and add my 2 cents worth.

I found when the brightness is turned all the up, blacks aren't as dark as they should be. I also found that when you increase the gamma setting, the colors get brighter and black doesn't, but you start blowing out some of the brighter details. My best results with the intel settings is

    brightness -5
    contrast 40
    gamma 1.4
    hue 0
    saturation 3

I just dont understand, why wouldnt they offer a really nice display on this laptop? I see it on a ton of laptops, they offer subpar displays but it usually to save money. With Alienware, we are known to spend a good amount of money so I have no idea why they skimped on the 14x display. Its the one thing on our laptops that we look at 100% of the time while using it.

the 900p display on the m14x isn't that bad. It's the 720p one that looks pretty bad.

The thermal paste they use is actually pretty good and designed to last a long time without being repasted. The problem is how it's applied, not the thermal paste itself. :p

I have the 720p screen and it looks amazing, there is absolutely nothing wrong with it.

900p is a waste and gimmick.

I bought my M14X through the outlet and though I was getting the 900p screen. I didn't. I am actually pleasantly surprised by the display. It's not bad for 14". Wish it was better, but for gaming especially it's good enough. My desktop is 1200p so that says alot. I'm used to being about to have stuff all over my screen. I miss that but that's not what I got this for anyways.

***Forgot to mention I hated it at first until I realized it came shipped with that one setting set to 125% (can't remember what it's called), set it back to 100 and all is good***

I have been messing around and I like couple of these along with yours

Intel Graphics Control Panel (Adjusting color saturation and brightness)
    Brightness +9
    Contrast: 48
    Gamma: .6
    Saturation +10

    OR

Intel Graphics Control Panel (Adjusting color saturation and brightness)
    Brightness +5
    Contrast: 48
    Gamma: .7
    Saturation +10

    EDIT

You nooblets all up to no good and always needing my help to spoon feed you. Here is the ICC file that you can get from notebookcheck review and it was really nice and read the r1 and r2 review. For the slick deal I got on the alienware m14x I am very happy with my purchase and still trying to decided if i can phase out the m18x down the road.
