I don't know if this will be welcome or helpful to others, but in my personal opinion the colour profile I am about to share here has changed my colours radically, what was once a blue tinted grey is now a much more realistic grey for example. Colours stand out slightly better too.

Anyway, a few days ago a new review was posted on Notebookcheck about the M14x, if you have some time and are interested in their opinion then read the review, I have and have to say it's detailed and interesting.

The link to the review itself is Review Alienware M14x Notebook - Notebookcheck.net Reviews.

The link to downloading the ICC colour profile file is http://www.notebookcheck.net/uploads/tx_nbc2/ICC_M14X.icc.

To install this profile (for newcomers, Windows 7):
    1) Right click on your desktop
    2) Left click on Screen Resolution
    3) Left click on the 'Advanced Settings' link
    4) Left click on the 'Colour Management' tab
    5) Left click on the 'Colour Management...' button
    6) Check the 'Use my settings for this device' checkbox
    7) Left click the 'Add...' button
    8) Find the ICC profile you downloaded and choose that
    9) Ensure it's the default profile, if not then left click the 'Set as Default Profile' button
    10) Left click the 'Advanced' tab
    11) Change the 'Device Profile:' to 'System default (Monitor_10.05.2011_1)'
    12) Left click the 'Change system defaults...' button
    13) Repeat steps 6 through 11 as necessary
    14) Finally check the 'Use Windows display calibration'
    15) You should notice a difference, hopefully for the better, you can now close the dialog windows

This is done at your own risk, there might be other ways of applying colour profiles that I don't know about, this is the first time I've applied a colour profile before. If the forum staff feel this thread isn't welcome then please remove it, but I can't see any problems with this if people want to try the colour profile.

Finally, this colour profile does NOT guarantee complete accuracy of your own screen on the M14x, all screens have slight differences and therefore should be calibrated with the Spyder 3 Express device.

I was going to post one myself once I got the software. Thanks for beating me to it, absolutely wanted!

I'll be trying this out when I get home from work, although I'm not sure how much you can hide the 42% gamut. It's got nice contrast and black levels, it's just a shame the gamut representation is so poor. I'm puzzled as to why AW would use this display as their upgrade, but oh well.

I'll try the ICC profile and see where that puts me.

Also, you can just type color management into the search bar and it will take you directly to the screen.

The problem was it was opening a coded page, not downloading a file .The few ICC profiles I've downloaded have been just files that download like any other.

EDIT: Firefox 4 was the culprit. Downloading through IE turned it into the .icc file I was looking for.

How do you guys get the profile to stay loaded? It is set as the default profile yet any time the Nvidia card is used, it reverts it back. Also upon logging out and back into windows it resets the profile as well.

In short, the profile doesn't stick.

I had this exact problem with my XPS 15. I downloaded a calibrated ICC profile, made sure it was set as the default and it would NEVER stay loaded. I had to manually load it just about all the time to keep using it.

Hmm, interesting. I haven't noticed this happen on mine, but perhaps that's because I'm not getting the problem you're having. I'll run a game in windowed mode when I can (currently revising for tomorrow's 2 hour hell exam for BSc Hons Computer Science Games, a module in Computer Systems Architecture, worst of all at 9am, but open book so that's something to be thankful for).

I must be doing something wrong, because I had this issue with the XPS 15.

Do you think it would make a difference that I used the Windows Calibration tool prior to seeing this topic? I unloaded the profile it created, but Windows still seemed to be reverting back to that profile, regardless of the default I set.

All appropriate boxes were ticked as well as "use windows display calibration."

For whatever reason, the ICC profile just would NOT stay loaded. I even went as far as disabling Igfxpers.exe which is known to throw off ICC profiles.

Yes, the profile gets reset to the factory ICC. If I find a solution I will report back. The custom M14X profile definitely makes the screen looking better.
