Can't find my original ram and was thinking to put in 4x2gb sticks to get back to 8gb since they're cheap and available local. I know the 2 under the bottom cover take 5 seconds to swap I don't even recall seeing other slots.. They buried way in there?

There are only 2 RAM slot, one on top of another and It is on the left hand side when you open the cover.

I remember someone here recently bought a new m14x shipped with bios A06, he installed 2X8GB and windows recognized the full 16GB ram.

The m11x can be ordered with 16, but not the m14x. Not quite sure why.

not sure why you would need that much ram on either machine unless you were running VM's or rendering stuff

i have 4gb of ram and its enough to virtualize windows 8 and linux with minor issues, 16 is just there so you can say you have 16

    QFT. Didnt I say so?

The RAM capacity is depending on both the CPU and the motherboard (though not sure how many GBs can M14x's motherboard can handle), the i7 2600QM can handle up to 16GB (DDR3 1066/1333Mhz by Default) while the i7 2700QM or higher can handle up to 32GBs (DDR3 1066/1333/1600 by Default). And like I said if the motherboard limit to 16GBs than the 32GBs will be useless. However the motherboard of M14x should be able to handle the 32GBs, because on my 7-year-old desktop can handle 32GBs, then a 1-year-old laptop should as well.

You can run 1 VM just fine with 4 gigs, but what happens when you need to run several at the same time making sure programs work with other OS's? then you might need more. :)

The problem with the m14x atm is its only got 2 DIMM slots. Unless somebody designs a 16gig ram chip, its just not going to work. 16 gigs is enough for the m14x anyway, If you need more just get the m17x or m18x :D

Yeah, but who know, because technology dont stay the same, maybe next year or so, someone would design a stick of 16GBs, but by that time perhaps the M14x get a re-design to enable addition 2 slot ram too. However 8GB is enough for everyday usage IMO, unless you doing a video-heavy processing or virtualization.

I use to think that, up until i had 8 gig + rar files to extract, It honestly sucks having 6 gigs and a 6 gig + rar file. :)

8GB is enough for alienware m14x. 16GB is too extra. But it is up to individual preference. Performance likewise, I don't see there won't be much difference.
