Am i correct in thinking our machines sit near the top of the line as a gaming laptop at the moment?

As time goes on i always start to worry that in 2 or 3 years this expensive investment will slowy fall down the ladder.I know thats just how it is when it comes to computers ,but how long do you predict it will be until our laptops are classed as old?

Alienware (Dell Brand) has good durability thought i've been using a Dell XPS for 3 years (in signature) for gaming and virtualization and it's still working like a charm. The only thing you can fear is the selling price, Alienware (even Dell) has not that good selling prices when time goes by :(

Your computer will stay on top of the line for a long time, then you may need to acquire another one but you can always rely on ebay for that :p. #IWork4AW

Realistically it should be fine for 2-3 years and Alienwares *generally* retain their resale value, not as well as Macs but they're still fairly well retained (from what i've personally seen). In 3 years you'll have to reduce your visuals some depending on the game just like now but nothing extreme unless it's like Crysis 5 or games such as that.

I'm just now selling my m17x r1 (as soon as my m14x r2 comes in), and only because I want something lighter, like half the weight lighter, haha. It has a core2quad, and while the current i7's are much faster it still blows away a lot of what I throw at it. Not that I'd turn down an upgrade, but I really don't want to sell my m17x. Only issue I've had was GPU drivers when I upgraded the bios, which was an easy fix.

I'm waiting for the Alienware: Skynet. Then I'll upgrade. ;)

My m14x r1 was $1560 new in the cart, and I was unable to sell it for $1000 four months later :[ It totally depends on where you live, as I refuse to use Ebay for large items like a laptop. Your laptop is only worth what people will pay. The r1 is quite dated already IMO, though it can still function as a powerful workstation for non-gaming tasks. The r2 has a much better "core", meaning fewer problems with the SATA speeds, lower temps, etc.. Add in a relatively powerful 650m w/ 2GB VRAM and the r2 should be more of a long-term contender.

I dont think the gt650m graphic card will last that long as mine gt555m can only play battlefield 3 online with all medium settings.

Medium? I can play on Ultra with AA off and shadows on high at 1080p pretty well.
