I was pretty sure about buying a M14x laptop but then I noticed its weight, is it true that with the power brick and cable that it weighs 8 pounds (3.6kg)?

How heavy do you find it when your carrying it around?

I won't need to carry it around too much but obviously the point of a laptop is to be portable.

it's not super heavy (at least I don't get that "i hate lugging around this thing" feeling like I did with my Toshiba Qosmio 17")... but that could be because I carry it around in my Swiss laptop backpack and it's not a huge burden on me... not as light as the m11x but i feel it's worth the trade-off for a larger screen and more power

I used my (very) old laptop with extra weight as a rough guideline, it is easier in a backpack compared to a over the shoulder but still. If its that weight I doubt I'd want to carry it for very long since that's not accounting for anything else I'd be carrying as well.

to be honest... i own the R1 and the thing.. while it seems very heavy for a little 14 inch laptop.. carrying it in a backpack with school books and binders and all.. makes the laptop seem not that bad.. yes its heavy... but i dont think its really that bad..

it's heavy but on the backpack it's ok. when you use it though you can't use it in every position (like lying around with your laptop some crazy position :p )like you could with a light laptop. if you know what I mean,.... i feel a need to put it on a table or a handrest whenver I can. but for the speed it's worth it :D

What's it like if you where running it on your lap, say on a train or something. Bottom fans ok? and battery getting a reasonable life.

I have been looking up benchmarks etc, I'm just looking for some 'real world' feedback :D I only play what I think are pretty low spec games, mostly LoL (league of legends) and a bit of skyrim / mass effect 2/3. I'd be happy with medium settings.

Thinking between macbook air or alienware. I know the alienware is WAY more powerful but the macbook air is 1.7cm thick and weighs basically 1kg compared to the 3.6kg of alien.

ive used mine on a greyhound bus.... it stayed in my lap well and was a bit of weight.. but nothing to make me say i dont like using it in my lap.. but when it comes to grabbing things outta my backpack.. and moving with it.. it can become a pain. but its worth it.. its one of those laptops u gotta move somewhere else then move yourself.. maybe i was just afraid of dropping mine :p

if i put it in power saving brightnes lowest, alien fx off and some things i can get 6hours. (normal use 3-5 hours), playing (only low spec games like PES2012 ) 1.5 hours. higher spec games like skyrim become unplayable when you're using it in battery. I put it kind of between/on top of my legs (middle part gets free air) when i want to use it on my lap. it cools better and it doesn't put heat in my legs and because the fan works less consumes less battery. the macbook air is not for games though.

Yea I read somewhere that it throttles everything when on battery, so gaming is pretty much only for when your tethered to a plug socket pretty much. That makes it into like a portable desktop but I guess with that hardware it has to be.

Really unsure about my choices now -_- thanks for the info though.

I would get a backpack instead of a messenger bag and you will be good to go. It is not that heavy to carry it around and the reason why it is so heavy is because you will be able to play your games everywhere haha. If you need any technical specification or pricing info you can send the AW team and e-mail to [email protected]. We'll get back to you ASAP.

I'd say the laptop itself is maybe the weight of a hardcover 400 page textbook or so? Seems that way. The charger doesn't add a noticeable amount of weight but is just awkward to fit in to a backpack, though that goes for any powerbrick.

The M14x is approximately 2.92kg as standard. The power adaptor is about 534g.

Therefore, yes, the M14x is 3.45kg all in, which is still pretty okay in my opinion. It's definitely lighter than most gaming notebooks, but it still feels like it's in the ballpark of a higher performance fifteen inch without actually giving any advantages of a fifteen inch, mainly because its sheer thickness brings its actual volume up to one nearly akin to a fifteen inch.

Personally, the M14x, to me, feels incredibly heavy (but thus very solid) when hand carried, due to its relatively compact dimensions (it's not very wide like a fifteen or seventeen inch would be so it has a more concentrated feeling of weight), but once you drop it into another bag such as a backpack (I repurposed my ASUS G73's for this), it feels refreshingly light, coming from a notebook that's total weight was easily one and a half kilograms more.

I don't own the M14x but a friend of mine does and to me the weight really wouldn't be part of the decision for me...would be the performance of it. Once you have kids, the weight of this is nothing to the weight of a child on your lap for hours at a time.

Once you carry something as heavy as an m17x around daily you won't worry about the weight. :p

On a more serious note, the m14x is the most powerful laptop in its size category. ;)

The m14x isn't heavy for what's inside, and if you think it is heavy it's time to build a little muscle ;).

i recommend going to your local Best Buy and checking out some laptops and comparing sizes/weights and actually get a feel for what you'll be lugging around - i bought a 17" toshiba before and that was HELL bringing it places (was only a couple lbs heavier than my m14x r2 but the bulkiness or something of it was just so unappealing... but i love what i have right now - doesn't bother me to carry it around for the power i get).
