Hi guys,
I have the 1600x900 screen. I want to play a game at a lower resolution of 1440x900....so there should be black bars on the sides.
But currently the graphics card stretches that resolution so that it fills the entire screen. How can I get it to not stretch?

it may be different with optimus (I dont have a computer with it) but I can accomplish what you're asking for in the nvidia control panel.
On the 'adjust desktop size and position' tab there are options for
'use nvidia scaling' (probably what you have now)
'use nvidia scaling with fixed aspect ratio' (enables black bars, but will still fill the screen in one dimension (e.g. if you chose 1200x 300 it would still fill the 1600 pixels wide, but only be 400 high rather than distorting it to be 900 high))
and lastly 'do not scale' where if you chose 640x480 you would only have the center 640x480 used, and huge bars on both sides.
hope that helps -
I'm inclined to say certain games are programmed differently to either utilize the screen space no matter what the resolution (stretch), or keep the aspect ratio true. While playing S.T.A.L.K.E.R. I noticed that changing the resolution to 4:3 or 16:10 gave me black bars on the sides and correct aspect ratios, for example.

ok...so I need the to remove the option to scale.
How do I do that on the 555GT with stock drivers? -
If it's Optimus, then you could try have a look in the options for the Intel GPU.
-
I can't uncheck it for some reason. anyone have any ideas? -
Maybe try lower the resolution first.

ugh...why is there no scaling options in Nvidia Control Panel? anyone have any ideas?
-
I think this is even less likely, but i have had laptops where this was actually a bios option rather than a driver option as the screen itself was doing the scaling...
Sorry, I dont have an m14x, though I'm thinking about getting one -
why is there no display scaling options in Nvidia Control Panel?
anyone? anyone? pls help! -
My old laptop from four years ago with a crappy (I mean absolutely awful) integrated graphics card had this option. Nvidia dropped the ball.
Check the control panel for the Intel graphics card. It may have this option. I don't know if that will have any effect if the 555m kicks in. -
Of course NCP had display scaling options.
Display -> Adjust desktop size and position -> Use NVIDIA scaling with fixed aspect ratio
The question is whether this will be maintained while using the IGP. -

Try setting a lower resolution first. 8x6 or something.

After loading the game, press CTRL+ALT+F11

That's odd... when i switch to 1400x900, the display scales just fine. Did you install new drivers or something? When you right click on the desktop >Graphics Options > Panel Fit, Maintain Display Scaling is the option you want checked.
New options ONLY appear when you are using a non-native Resoltion. Try switching to 1440x900 on the desktop and try messing with the options. -
The IGP on my old computer had an option to disable scaling and/or resizing in games (or any application running in fullscreen).
If you want to play a game at a 4:3 resolution on the m14x without it being stretched out, I think the only way to do it is to set the computer to a 4:3 resolution before the launching the game, and tweaking some settings in control panel. That may not even do it.
On my old comp > change a single setting once. Then any games running at 4:3 will maintain their original aspect ratio (black bars on the side of the screen). There was no need to change the resolution of the computer every time the program is run. -
ok, it seems like the stretching out is a crysis issue.
when I play other games at a lower resolution than my native, they have black borders. only crysis stretches it out for some reason.
How do you play in a lower resolution without screen being stretched?
