you need to "extend desktop" instead of mirroring. then you can set resolutions separately. you can also make the HDTV your "primary" display if you want to easily use it for daily work/browsing/etc.. more desktop space than the internal display.

I just learned you can use the Nvidia Control Panel to mess with this stuff, too. I had good luck using it with a finicky hotel TV that didn't have lots of display options. I set it to 720p, then shrunk the resolution using the NCP scaling tools until the whole desktop was on the tv screen. Looked fine.

Intel iGPU controls the HDMI output. If you need to configure the setting for your external display right-click your desktop and select graphics properties. Then under general settings you'll find the scaling option as well as resolution and other settings.

In my case, it is control by the NVCP (NVIDIA Control Panel) as like "DoomMunky" has said, the CP in the Intel graphic setting seem to be useless for me. However the TV I was plugging is a HDTV, not sure if it is any different though.

Just tried on one over here and you're right, I stand corrected. Although for some reason I was able to scale the screen from within the intel control panel.
