mudfl4p you need to help me I just got this m14x like 2 weeks ago, and I can barely play bf3.

I get about 24fps on mid/low settings... and the thing gets insanely hot, and sometimes it locks up.

Okay mate, have you changed your settings in your nvidia control panel so BF3 runs of your nvidia card not your integrated intel card? add me on steam if you need any more help. :) - t3hjack

Yeah I did change that setting - but I don't know maybe I just have too many background programs running ... I don't have it overclocked or anything...

It's really easy to overclock m8t. Go to google type in MSI AFTERBURNER and it's literally just a little bar you move up. I've got mine on full and that's 770/1540/900 and i'm running games on ultra. DO you have your turbo mode in your bios turned off?

I thought MSI afterburner only worked for radeons! I'll check that out then.

I don't know if turbo mode is turned off ... did you overclock the cpu in the bios or with msi afterburner?

    What temperatures do you get?

Here's a snapshot of all the crap loaded in my taskbar:

    http://screensnapr.com/e/eNHhHT.jpg

and a quick shot of my task manager (116 processes)

    http://screensnapr.com/e/qDRhZQ.jpg

this is just when I'm idling ... it shoots up when playing games. Is this maybe too much multitasking to have going on in the BG?

WOOOOOOOAH, why do you have so many google chromes open?! Nope, MSI afterburner works for my nvidia 555m 3gb card fine. I would turn turbo mode off if i was you 2 see how high your temps get gaming. Nope i haven't touched my cpu and i do not plan too, it's not needed the power it has is relatively good. I have the i7 2670QM 2.2ghz with 3.1ghz turbo mode which is disabled.

go into bios and just look for 'turbo mode' it will have disable and enable just simple disable it and see how you go there. I have no idea why you have so many google chromes open, that could be half of your problem! but other then the crap that you have open try getting out of it all. well only use the stuff that you need.

go into start then type on msconfig then whilst you're in that click on the startup tab, i'll show you a snapshot of what mine has on startup

and this is what my MSI afterburner is set up like

What kind of FPS do you get when playing BF3?

I usually close chrome when playing games.

How many processes do you have normally? (look at the bottom of the task manager)

Those processes you see are not the main Google Chrome's process, those are just extension and other smaller tabs opened, as Google Chrome unlike IE or Firefox, it does not run as one whole process, instead it split the process into many small process so then when one process is not responsible, it will not interfere with other process, you can easily see those when you see the "Aw, Snap!" error. That's what I like about Chrome - If one tab is not responding, then others is still operational.

As for the MSI Afterburner, it can be use with any card that support OC, I think card like GS 7800 or lower is not compatible with the OC though.

Just for s and giggles I am going to ask.

You reccommend disabling Turbo Boost and OC'ing you GPU.
kinda like keeping heat balanced but putting power where it will be more efficiently used?

and 5842 3d marks... that seems low.,

Yeah 5842 mark is too low, it is more like the laptop is using the Intel HD Graphic than the GT555M, however I also have run a test which surprisingly the score is completely different: Horrible 3DMark score & lagarific bootup time ... what's wrong?
