Hi guys i own an alienware m14x r1 and i planning to remove my DVD R/W to replace it with a SSD, the shop that i go only has 3 brand of SSD sandisk, transcend and aDATA which ssd do you all think i should i get? and if i remove the DVD R/W and replace it with a SSD will it void the warranty totally? Thanks for helping :)

I would pass on all three of them....they are cheap and have the most problems.

    1. Your warranty wouldnt be voided for the rest of the laptop.
    2. None of these brands they are known for low performance, cheap quality and alot of controller bugs.
I have good experience with Samsung SSDs. There are some other very good brands too like Intel, Crucial, Kingston etc...

And you dont need a Sata III SSD for the Oddbay. The highest data transfer rate is somewhere between Sata I and Sata II speed for this connection. So you can buy a much cheaper SSD.

yes you probaby want to do just that. most of the people that did it, did it that way. if you want sata III speed you want to have bios a5 or earlier. from bios a6 you just have sataII for stability reasons. I personally use a modded bios a8 with sataIII you can get on the technoinferno forum. a stable ssd even with sata III is samsung 830 ( http://forum.notebookreview.com/alienware-m14x/686724-help-upgrading-hdd-ssd.html). and if you have some earlier type of hdd it won't work in the odd. just search in these forums, all the information is here (many people did it).

because you'll have the hdd also for data than you'll maybe be ok with 128gb but if you want to install more than 4-5 games and some apps on the ssd get the 256 one. and don't expect to have stability with sata III speeds with all ssds. if you want sata II than I think you'll be ok with pretty much every ssd you choose.

i've had almost pretty much no problems with the kingston hyperX series ssd's (the only "problem" is that you can't hibernate/sleep the laptop properly - which is every ssd as far as i know for the m14x; doesn't bother me really cause the shutdown/reboot times are minimal)... decent pricing as well
