Hi guys... Im a newbie in laptop stream...
For my current desktop is so old... it hardly could run any updated games nowadays...
therefore im searching for new laptop to play all updated games, editing photos and videos for my Canon 7D. and wishing to play BF3 as well

Now guys I live in Hong Kong and im a HK citizen.
therefore i would just say out the spec out here, since it would be slightly difference. I rreally need help guys so plz bare with me.
PS. Buying Alienware In HK is much expensive then buying it in US...

Alot of people in HK would just suggest me to buy new desktop + laptop for bringing it to Uni everyday.
But ah... Weight will not be my concern.
and I currently using Galaxy Tab for all my doc and presentation
Therefore Ill only consider this two laptop..

    Alienware M14x
    -Win 7 Ultimate
    -Intel Core- i7-2720QM
    -8GB DDR3
    -NVIDIA GT555M 3GB DDR3
    -750GB 7200rpm
    -14" HD WLED (1600x900)
    -HKD $14999

    HP Envy 17
    -Win 7 Pro
    -Intel Core- i7-2630QM
    -8GB DDR3
    -AMD Radeon HD 6850 1GB DDR5
    -2TB 5400rpm
    -17.3" 3D Full HD (1920x1080)
    -HKD $15980

Now... my heart is half-ly pointed at Alienware M14x for its look, performance, alienFX, and the portablilty.

For Envy 17, The full HD screen which could provide me a very nice platform for editing phots, and videos. the 3D tech could be a blast for the future altho im a person with glasses... i hardly can imagine when i wear 3D Glasses with my own pairs on....

Well... I dunno how to choose between the display card...
    GT555M Vs AMD 6850

The storage is easy problem to solve as i could buy a external hard disk.
I dunno guys... is a tough decisions..........
Can anyone give me some strong advices or comments?
or people :) welcome anyone who wanna share or ask question as well

    ThX ALL :)

The GT555 and the Radeon 6850 are close and really isnt much difference between the to as far as performance goes but the GT555 is higher on the chart according to the website i looked at. I have really enjoyed my m14x and really like the design and high performance. It will play any game on the market many on medium to high settings. With the HP you will get a bunch of preinstalled junk programs but on the m14x there is very little trash software. Hope this helps.

You'd be getting higher frame rates with your games on the M14x due to the smaller screen size and resolutions which won't make a big difference for older games but might come in handy for Battlefield 3, just a thought.

Out of the two my personal preference, for gaming, would be for the M14x this time, though if the videocard of the 17" Envy was beefier I'd have probably opted for that, puerly on gaming terms that is.
I would discount the 3D gaming capability of the Envy as it's not going to be an alltogether pleasant and fluid experience with modern games, the GPU ain't up to snuff, especially at higher resolutions! So I wouldn't make a decision based on the 3D.

However, you mention fiddling with your 7D (very nice btw!) and if that is your priority then I'd go for the larger screen, personally, as I'd enjoy the gaming capabilities of the Envy (which is already quite good) and make the most of the screen for photo editing and whatnot.

Whoa, rambled quite a bit then. I apologise. It's quite a tough choice but it kinda depends on what you REALLY want to do with your machine? Best of luck!

I've ben using my m14x with a 1080p 23" samsung display... the card handles any game at 1080p.... at least medium settings.... the machine is great.... only 1 problem with the mic so far.

HP just announced this week that it's exiting the PC manufacturing business and doing only software now. If you want to buy from a company that will be easy to attain hardware support, it's a no brainer to stick with Alienware. I was considering the Envy as well but with light of HP quitting computers, I'm glad I went with Alienware.

Well HP said they MIGHT "Spin off" their PC department. I'm pretty sure "spinning off" means something similar to IBM selling to Lenovo, and I doubt that this will happen for a while. On notebookcheck.net the 6850 is and older review with DDR3 (I think). I have a DV6qe and it generally beats out the Alienware 14, at least in benchmarks (vantage and 3d mark11) and from what I've gathered, the 6850 beats the 6770m. If you want a cool looking, good performing machine, the Alienware is NICE for sure.

If you want raw performance, the DV6 has it beat and you generally can get it under $1000 USD with a coupon. The DV6z Llano is nice too as it's 3dMark11 gets a bit over P1900 EASILY.

All that said if you don't really care about batterylife and don't mind carrying a powerbrick around, the Sager/Malibal/xotic 8130 seems freekin' fantastic with the 1080p screens and the 560 just KILLS.

Wow.. this is completel a shocker. I was 100 percent convinced when I saw the OP that it would be HP ENVY spam city since everything is better than the m14x (in the opinion of most here). Glad some folks are starting to take a little pride in their hardware.
