m17x took place of the m15x. m14x is just a new 14in laptop. Its GPU is a downgrade compared to the top ATI 5850 card.

I think either could take place of the m15x depending on the user needs.

You can still buy the M15x off the Dell outlet website. Fish around for some coupons, i think there are quite a few that apply (google)

The m15x was almost as the big as the m17x anyways, it's not a huge loss. Dell just figures now they have the ultraportable netbook, the portable laptop, the 17 inch monster, and the 18inch god.

What most people have been agreeing on is that the lower end M15X is now the portable M14X. And the more powerful M15X is now the M17X R3 (which, as others above have pointed out, is just as big as 17 inch - it was only an inch smaller in width*). And the old M17X R2 market is now the M18X (which is also about only an inch larger width*-wise than the M17X R2)

I say width as in left to right

    I say good riddance! :p

I'd much rather have portability + battery and take a somewhat small performance hit in the graphics department (15% [as some noted] @ 1600x900 vs 1920x1080 ~ 555m vs 460m).

Eh, at the same time I think they could've done something neat with the m15x, like make it the "mainstream". Maybe keep it at 800$ or lower but still play games well. That way itd be like an alienware for almost anyone.
