I keep reading about temps on this system. I keep reading how its necessary to re-paste, shut off hyperthreading, or turbo boost. I mean is this completely required to do so my laptop don't crap out. I mean Im all stressed out now over this and really dont want to break into a new laptop. Im capable of doing this, but I figured the high dollar Im spending for this unit, I wouldnt think I would have to do this.

    ----frustrated----

    Hey

I see your point but I have a M17x R3. And haven done any mods in the bios... Temps are fine and no issues unless ur over clocking then u may need to take the steps you mentioned cooling is a big issue when gaming u should have a cooling pad if ur gaming for a while but depends on where ur gaming some people stupid enough to game while there in bed having the laptop on top of the sheets can't breath..... Then complain about over heating or BSOD...

These machines are built well and May not as this thin as so called razor blade but u can push these machines past it limits as like a desktop can... If ur worried about cooling and bit of a gamer get a cooling pad but leaving everything on stock clocks and the laptop can breath easy u won't have any heat issues or use the bottle top mod where you get bottle top back of the laptop raises it by inch and breathes better I prefer cooling fan...

Remember people buy laptops and overclock them like desktops no issues but u need watch out for heat and then it comes to re paste gpu or cpu which is easy enough... Regards pasting what Dell uses is not top grade remember there not custom built where they use best paste its production we recommend re paste to drop temps by 5-10 deg or if you have a throttle issue.....

    Good luck

I bought the coolermaster notepal U2 with the fans that you can move around. Will gaming stink if I dont over clock?

Oh nice there good position them right underneath the vacume vent on gpu and cpu and ur temps will be perfect and no leaving them on stock clocks will not affect ur gaming only want to over clock a low end card to set your graphics settings on ultra to able to have good fps and good graphics quality but then that depends on what card u get if u get a good card leave standard clocks you will be fine...

Sorry man, but there is no doubt the M14xR2 has at least somewhat inadequate cooling. This is influenced by many factors, like getting the i7 vs i5, getting lower quality chips (not all GT650m and i7 are quite the same, some work better than others), living in a hot climate, etc.

The bottom line is the M14xR2 benefits immensely from a repaste. Dell uses the cheapest thermal goop possible, and it's very poorly applied. Unlike others, I never got stuttering while playing Skyrim, Rage or other games, but my fan would speed up to 100% after a few minutes of playing and it would stay there. So I repasted with Arctic Silver 5, and while I did not monitor the temps too closely, the fan barely reaches 100% for a few seconds at a time.

I have said it in another thread though... If I hadn't gotten an amazing deal on my M14xR2, I'd probably have bought the Sager NP9150 from a reputable reseller.

On top of repasting a M14x, I recommend raising the rear such that the intake gets more air to breathe. This has improved the temperature for me by as much as ten degrees. Thus a notebook cooler that significantly raises the M14x with a large mesh surface tends to provide a more significant improvement.

Before I start, I want to let you know guys that is my personal advice, I am not saying any of these because I work for Alienware, but because I am the proud owner of an m14x r2 :D. Temps are not so bad, were I live it gets really hot during the day and so far, I haven´t had any overheating issues while gaming. Re pasting I do have to admit is a good idea, I haven´t had to yet, but I know I will soon, disabling the turbo boost will not affect performance during gaming (I disabled it myself). So far, I haven´t had any problems with my laptop, I love it and it runs every game I play like a champ.

By disabled turbo boost what advantage do you get? Cpu running max?

I have a friend with M14x r2 and he does not have any issues reason why i posted here and i have worked on these units before remember its a mobile gaming laptop alienware can only do so much for a 14 inch unit with cooling..

Re paste i do agree i know i sound like an alienware fan boy but they are a good units and my personal opinion on both m17 and m14 are as good as it gets in both there are other brands out there sager is not available In australia or i haven seen here anyways but end of the day the all have pros and cons in every brand laptop..

Keep in mind these tips to keep the temps under control. Good practices to perform regularly.
