This has been happening to me for awhile, but it always resolves itself when I update drivers. I have the M14x R2, with 650M 2gb vram, i7 processor, 12 gb ram, 750gb HDD. Now I'm not here to discuss my set up, so let's get to the problem. I usually run games quite well, but right around the time when I need a driver update, the games don't run as well as the previously did. For example, I usually play Fallout 3 smooth at Ultra. However, every time I play I use the 'auto detect graphics settings' option, and sometimes it sets it to high instead of ultra. So I go check out drivers and download the new ones, or sometimes windows released a new update or whatever. But this time this doesn't seem to be the case. My graphics driver is up to date (no beta drivers either), my BIOS is up to date, my integrated is up to date, all my wireless cards are up to date, I'm pretty sure my sound card is good, and Windows has no new updates. I used device manager and checked every device and they were all 'up to date'. Has anyone else have this problem? Could you suggest a software to check my drivers, or any other fix? This is really frustrating when playing games that I can usually run on high, like Max Payne 3, and forcing me to play on low or medium.

Check your temps when running games, if they are above 85ish it might be throttling. I had the same problem and tried everything software related, all it was, was dust buildup blocking the outlet which caused it to reach upto 100 degrees :p
I had a tech come out and replace the heat sink and it was fixed back to running games on high such as witcher 2 and bf3 ;)

I use a program called core temp, now it reaches max 60 ish degrees when gaming ;)

I'd say throttling as well if It happens partway into the game. It could also be that your trying to run the game off the intergrated GPU instead of the igpu. Have you tried whitelisting your games at all? it could be worth a try as well.

Thanks for the help. I'll start measuring the temps. To bigtonyman, I always check and make sure all of the programs I want to run integrated are and all the games use dedicated. Not sure what you mean by white-listing, but I constantly go into Nvidia Control Panel and set up things such as which programs do what and what options are utilized. It never happens mid game though. In this particular instance I'm fairly sure it was overheated. I went to a party and when I got back the games ran fine. I had been using Fraps in conjunction with gaming earlier, so that may have been the problem.

Make sure that you have the games set-up like this.
