Check out the Alienware page. It now lists the GTX 580m as a new featured option on the m14x. Is that a typo??

I think its a typo, maybe they meant to put it on the m18x. Its not avalible if customizing... I hope they didnt mean to add the 560m D:

I just ordered mine saturday. I would hate to have to return to get the 560M :(

    This would be very funny...
Currently m14x cannot handle GT555m (battery-shutdown issue)... and they are going to put that "beast" inside!!!!

If they add a 12cell battery... maybe :p

I am returning mine while im in the return timeframe so that i can re-buy it when they add that option, its listed, good enough for me, id rather wait another month to have a WAYYYY better graphics card option, i play plugged in 100% of the time if im gaming anyway so battery life being tier is of no consequence to me.

Seriously??? I checked out the site just now and on the Laptops page where it show the m11x, the m14x, m17x and m18x and their respective specs this is what I saw for the m14x - "new" 2.0GB Nvidia GeForce GTX 580M <><>

I was totally stumped for a moment, and then went to the customise page. I tried out ALL THREE of the available presets and NONE of them had the GTX 580M under 'Video Card' category :|
Maybe it just hasn't showed up YET on the site, or even more so maybe its just a typo, since the M17x has the exact same thing written for it.

God knows, the m14x can't run the GT555M on full power in battery mode, how on earth is it ever gonna run the GTX580 !! Maybe the catch is USE-ON-AC-ONLY !!

Makes me wanna put my order on hold just to see if its true or not...

Doh! It's gone off the page now. It must have been a typo that they fixed. After comparing the two pages, it looks like they were supposed to put it under the M18x, which didn't list it in the previous version.

Here is the first version people were questioning:

    First version

Here is it later after it was fixed:

    Second version

Notice the M18X doesn't list any graphics in the first and the M14x lists two. In the second one, the GTX 580 is moved to the M18x...which makes sense.

Dell would NEVER EVER put a 580 in the m14x even if it was possible because it would take away from sales of the m17x and possibly m18x but we can keep dreaming ;-)

My heart just dropped. But it looks like a typo. Plus I doubt they'd put gpu's powerful enough to be on the m17/18x on the m14x. And plus the gtx560m is a 600 dollar option on the m17x lol.

That's what I keep saying. People keep complaining that they can't play highly demanding games using 100 percent of cpu and gpu power. Like where are you that you have to use all your m14x battery life on an hour of gaming?

I think it's a bad idea to fit such a powerful card into a 14" chassis (granted, the m14x is not your average 14-incher). It just makes me wonder about the cooling capabilities, if it'll be able to keep the temperatures down.

I doubt it, keep in mind that the gt555m is a non modular integrated chip that they can fit anywhere they wanted basically. Actual dedicated cards are somewhat modular. Well they can be interchanged physically, not guaranteed to work tho. The m14x doesn't have any space for an actual dedicated modular card with the current configuration. It would require a second fan as well. In the time they take to make a dedicated card to fit in the m14x, it'll be a whole new laptop :)

Based on the temps of the m14x with 555m and quad core, there is NO CONCEIVABLE CHANCE of a 580m ever being put in this machine.

It's just not even remotely possible.

560m would be a massive stretch in itself.

The only reason to play on battery would be a little of stuff like Minecraft, that too while on a flight or something! I see no reason why you need to game on battery - the USP of this laptop is its portability and battery life [compared to other alienware laptops] and it can handle most games when not on full power, as long as details/resolutions are knocked down...

That said, I bet it'll be pleasant for battery life to run it down like that in just an hour ;) prepare for nuclear meltdown!

Not going to happen, but if you were saying that they going to put it on M17x/M18x then that more like it is. Plus M14x is seem to struggling with GT555M so how will it going to handle GTX 580M?

well the thing is, if they put a 580 - it will not work and the price would be wayy to much - so all i want to see is like a 460 or a 560, or even a good ati card

See, I wonder...everyone seems to say that the M17xR3 is shrunk down to just about the size of an M15x, right?

So...why don't they bring back the M15x and shrink that down a bit, since it did have quite a bit of screen border and keyboard edge that could be cut down. Then they could put in some better hardware.

Agree man, let's see if they consider something like that in the R2 release... The GT555M is good, yes, but when you come to think of it, there's no REAL boost in performance when you choose the maxed-out version over the base model! Its downright ridiculous that they didn't offer a slightly more powerful card option for those who were willing to pay in excess of $1800...

I think we'd all be happy if they had put in something like a GTX 260M / 280M or ATi options like the HD 4850 or better.... we can't expect beasts like the 4xx or 5xx series but still.... something more than a gt555m...

If the R2 version will include the new Ivy Bridge CPU design which has the 3D transistors, which is said to run at lower heat and lower power draw for a particular clock rate, maybe they can try for a stronger graphics card since there'd be less heat to dissipate from the proc itself.

Personally I'm hoping not so much for a better GPU but for upgradeable GPU and procs, but let's see what we get...

The 580 was definitely a typo.

At that point, I wish they would just reintroduce a new revision to the M15x. I think they could have supported both models and not need to drop it for the M14x.

M11x = ultraportable part time gamer (ULV CPU and modest GPU)
M14x = best balance of portability and gaming (most CPU options, high end midrange GPU ala GT 555m/AMD 6770M)
M15x = true performance laptop (high end single GPU solutions, maybe upgradeable MXM, single HDD bay)
M17x = bigger performance laptop (high end single GPU solutions, MXM, dual HDD bays, obviously bigger screen, HDMI Input)
M18x = the "never leaves your desk", non-portable portable (dual GPU solutions)

Exactly. Since they managed to cut the M17x down to about the size of an M15x, cut the M15x down a bit more and give us updated hardware.
