Hello, I had been playing with around 5 months with my Alienware.

The first 1~2months or so, I had no problems at all, Call of Duty Black ops ran perfectly, smooth no problems at all
League of legends (one my main games) ran smooth as hell too 60 FPS steady, even in teamfights no probelms at all, would stay in 60 FPS

However, 3 months ago or so my League of Legends started lagging a bit (40FPS steady) i kept playing thinking it was the game's problem not the computer problems. But in the past two weeks or so, my FPS got worst (dropped to 10~15FPS and stayed there) I thought it was my computer problem and tried everything.

Went to the NVIDIA control pannel changed the preferred graphic card to the high performance NVidia card, whitelisted all of my games I even downloaded the NVoptimus tool to see if it was working and it actually says it is on.

After I did all of this my FPS was 60 in League of Legensd but strangely, after 3 mins or so it starts dropping to 50 and suddenly it starts going around between 30~65 but it mainly stays below 50 FPS
Same with call of duty, it doesnt even stay in 40 FPS it keeps fluctuating below 40 FPS....

Can any1 tell me what the problem is -_- I would like to disable my M14x intel HD graphics but I know I cant since the screen works through the intel HD, I already tried BIOS but i can't do it there either. It feels as though my Nvidia isnt working 100% of the time during games
Also, my GPU-Z shows the Intel before the Nvidia graphics card is this normal?

Any1 know a way to do this?

Additional info: Driver updated to 306.97
    dx diag attached

I would check your temps as it sounds like your GPU is throttling. If temps are high, you can try cleaning out the fan/heatsink and seeing if that improves temps at all. Hope this helps! :)

Did you update to Bios A09? A09 is a broken bios that has been killing the nvidia cards in the m14x. It disables them and they will not turn back on for many owners, rendering the laptop useless, as the only video card still working is the intel and it's is about as useful for gaming as bag of wet cats....Check your device manager if you updated to a08 or a09 and see if your nvidia card is showing a warning. If it is call and scream at dell and let them know their poorly QA'd bios has destroyed yet another expensive laptop...

While you're correct that there have been some reports for this, when this happens users are receiving an error message about the missing video card without having to enter into the device manager to use it. This particular user is using a R1 not R2 (where the problem is being reported) and has also stated that it works fine for a minute or two and then slows way down (throttling).

You're information in this thread isn't helpful.

Most likely a good cleaning of the fans and vents is what is necessary. Also a good repasting.

Yes my alienware is R1 and is updated to BIOS08, however im pretty sure the NVIDIA graphics card does actually work, thing is it isnt working as it is supposed to be

theres stuttering in between game and FPS drops from 60 to 30~50 all the time and at random ranges.

What do you mean repasting? o.o and does any1 have a video of how to clean my fans and vents? I opened it up but im really lost and I dont wanna touch anything unnecessary (tech noob here sorry :p) thx for the replies btw

Well i think I fuc**** it up. I used my alienware disk of windows 7 to update it, and after updating it my bar at the bottom is weird and when i turn on the GPU-Z to check my NVIDIA card, the CUDA, Phys X and Direct Compute are all turned off and I don't know how to turn it on

Anyone have any idea of what i can do please??? I really am in desperation.... Should i just restore windows 7 as it was with my old disk deleting all my files?

I think you need to do several things.

    1. Get some compressed air, remove the bottom plate and clean out the fans and vents.
    2. Respawn your machine and put it all back to defaults. (You're going to lose data doing this one).

I am 90% sure its heating issues. I had the same problem recently. Install a software called Speccy by Piriform. Open Speccy using the high performance GPU and leave it running. Start any game and when your performance starts to drop, switch to Speccy and look at the temps. If they are sitting around +90C, they your hardware is throttling and either your fan exhaust has a lot of dust or your i7 has the turbo frequency option on (If you have this on, turn it off in the bios. More trouble than benefit on the m14x). I would suggest opening the bottom and cleaning the laptop. Also get yourself a cooling pad and NEVER leave the laptop on carpets or other surfaces where it can do the job of a vacuum cleaner.
