First post on here :) my name is alex...

(before someone says it, yes I updated my drivers and it is indeed using the gt550m when gaming, I think... not sure how to tell)
Anyway, got my new laptop a week ago and from what I have heard, I am not getting the performance others are getting on BF3. I run 720p at medium-ish-y-low-ish graphics, or native at low graphics. Some people are saying they can run native at high and that seems impossible :l I was wondering if there is something I need to do in order to increase the speed on higher resolutions?

    SPECS
    Core i7 2.3 ghz
    8gb ram
    gt550m 3gb
300gb HD if that matters lol

it has the high res screen btw

@OP You've got the M14x R1, same as mine, so your GPU should be the GT 555M. It should be able to run BF3 at least around mid-low level graphics with native resolution, if not try overclocking it with an app like MSI Afterburner.

Have you tried whitelist the GPU in your NVIDIA control panel? Also make sure that you are up to date with the NVIDIA driver. So what setting and how many framerate do you get in BF3? And one more thing, do you Plug in while playing or using the battery while playing?

For me, I overclocked my GT555M (see my signature), and even at High my framerate are at least at 30-40, at Low, it's around 50-60.

When i was running BF3 on an m14x R1 i realized that you needed Throttlestop to keep the cpu turbo boosted to run BF3 properly. Otherwise it sits at 2.3 Ghz, this is a bit too slow for BF3. If you run throttlestop and keep it at 2.7Ghz you'll net another 15 FPS average.

I got throttlestop, not entirely sure how to use it... do I just click game mode and turn it on?

Yes it does, your computer can run that game without issues on mid-high settings but to get it to Ultra the R2 is a must.
