Anyone running fallout 2 (steam version) on their m14x?

I am trying to get it working right and so far it is being a bit of a problem.

When the game is vanilla, I get this kind of rainbow effect on certain colours. If I try to use the compatibility mode to force 256 colours, Fallout 2 notices there are compatibility options at work and just refuses to start at all.

I downloaded the widescreen patch and followed the instructions on the steam forums to apply it. The game started up all right, but the rainbow colours were still there. Then when I tried to set the resolution to 1600x900, the game wouldn't start properly. The intro movies would load, and I could skip them with ESC, but the game only seemed to ever render the first frame of the video and then just stop. The sounds acted as though I was skipping through videos until I got on to the main game screen. At this point if I alt-tabbed out and back to the game the menu screen was visible, but my cursor didn't move and it was impossible to play.

Has anyone got this game working right?
