Hello! I've recently been lurking here and have seen lots of helpful information regarding some issues, but as of now I have encountered one of my own and was hoping I'd get some help with it.

So I've had my M14X for about 2 - 3 months now and ever since December I've been having very frustrating and annoying problems with it. Back in December I purchased the new Star Wars MMO. It had terrible framerate issues, the game would run at about 60 FPS for 3 seconds, and then drop to 10 for the next 3 seconds, and then return to 60. But the strange thing is this would only start occurring about 5 minutes into the game, perhaps an indication of overheating? But I do have a cooling pad. Since then that's the only game I've been playing, recently today I reformatted my laptop because it seems nothing will fix it. I haven't got around to installing Star Wars yet but I have been playing Skyrim. To my surprise, the problem still persists.

Now is it just me, or should this laptop be able to EASILY play Skyrim on medium settings without having FPS stutter ever 5 seconds? I've been monitoring my GPU while playing and it seems it's been spiking violently. This is never occurred until mid December, and not even a reformat has solved it.

All my graphics cards are up to date along with the GPU drivers. If there's anything else you guys need to know regarding the issue let me know.

Here's a picture of my resource monitor while playing Skyrim:

    And my specs:

    Dual core i5 2300k
    Nvidia GeForce 555M 1.5GB
    6GB of RAM
    500GB Hard Drive.

have you tried using you old gpu driver or alien respawn? if both don't work then you should call support.

Yeah I've tried alien respawn, I'll give an older GPU driver a go tomorrow, if that doesn't work then I'll call support. Thanks.

not sure what your main issue is, but to fix SWTOR, Here are some common fixes you can try:

Star Wars: The Old Republic Tips for Graphical Performance:

    Tip #1:
Compatibility Mode for Windows XP -
Right Click on the SWTOR short cut. Go to Properties. Then the Compatibility Tab. Select the Run this program on compatibility mode for Windows XP Service Pack 3.
Also select: Run as administrator. Apply changes.
This makes a world of difference on laptops.

    Tip #2:
Disable Visual Themes and Desktop Composition -
Right click on desktop. Select Personalize.
Scroll down to Basic and High Contrast Themes
Select Windows Classic. Hit Apply Changes.
This may take a while to apply those changes. Then you can see how much the Windows look has changed over the years.

    Tip #3:
Disable GPU scaling in the control panel
Adjust desktop size and position to no scaling.
You can do this from your AMD (ATI) control panel or your NVidia control panel. I'm at work right now, so I can't look at where the settings are.

    Tip #4:
Makes sure your computer is running on high performance mode or the CPU will bottleneck during battles and such. You can change this by looking in the bottom right hand corner and clicking and the power/battery icon and make sure its set to high performance. :)

Most of these tips should help that graphics related lag problem until Bioware optimizes their graphics. But this makes the game playable for me.

Thanks to iglaze for putting this together. Hope one of these things resolves your issues with SWTOR. :)

I started having similar issues at one point, tried a ton of stuff, ended up disabling the software for my wireless card. I upgraded my card to the killer 1102, the software that came with it seemed to be causing some sort of issue. The fps/lag spikes were most prevalent in swtor for me.

You may not have the same wireless card, but I would make sure there is no software running that isn't absolutely necessary. You would think new age dual and quad core processors with tons of ram wouldn't get bogged down by some simple program running in the background but who knows.

Also you could get hwinfo, there is a way to record cpu temps and cpu speed, you could see if the system is throttling because of high temps. I don't think the i5 should have any heat problems though unless you are blocking your vents or something.

    Bigtonyman,
Did you intend to quote me? I was suggesting possible fixes other than what you mentioned because of my similar experience which is now gone.

If you did intend to ask me that question then my answer is yes I did try those things and it really ended up being the software for my wireless card. I did tests with the software on and off and it would repeatedly drop frame rates significantly when it was enabled. That software actually has some controls for the network connection that was probably causing my lag. The OP may have something similar going on.

I have tried every fix under the sun relating to SWTOR including all of those, and nothing prevails. But as another posted stated I do have a Killer wireless card and it's not updated, I'll update it now and post the results.

Installed the update and I've been playing Skyrim for the last 30 minutes, and the issue still persists.. I think a call to Alienware is in order!
