    Hi! I have a new m14x with A09 bios, nvidia gt 650 m. While i'm playing, tha fan is VERY loud..but i saw that temperature stay around 62-65 C in Skyrim with all details ULTRA. I think 65C is a very good temperature for a laptop.
    But while i'm doing nothing special, like surfing with firefox, i don't understand why the GPU temeprature goes between 37 and 45 C (although the system are using hd intel 4000 with Optimus), and i don't understand why the fun is a little noisy and sometimes is very quite for 1-2 minutes(VERY quite...perfect silent), and than it comes back to be little noisy.

    It's sad a new one is like that, but it's because of the poor way the laptop is built. Best tip is to try a repaste of the thermal paste but that didn't work for me.

    Time for Alienware to step it up with the R3 and use Dual Cooling Solution even if it adds a lil bit more weight or remove the optical drive overall and I wouldn't mind if it will give better cooling and whisper quiet fans. If Asus can do it on their new G46 that only weighs 5.5lbs then I'm sure AW can too.

    It's not poor way at all. The built quality is quite good compared to all the laptops / notebooks out there.

    The issue is as colpolite mentioned, the fan. To bring all that heat from the center towards the side of the laptop with 1 fan, no matter how much copper pipe they use it's almost impossible...

    The only way you can have it quieted down is by repasting with a very good paste (though it is very difficult, because you have to dismantle everything to reach to that point) and secondly, have your operating system reinstalled without any 'garbage' in it. For cleaning you only ccleaner and no other software.

    By adding some other stuff to your operating system, it makes your CPU heat up without any reason and fan will stay on because the computer tends to heat up (after a period and especially after playing a game) towards the center and the PCH diode will stay hot.

    1. Have your system repasted with a very good paste;

    2. Have your operating system clear and cleaned installed;

    3. After you game, take a break of about 30 minutes and have your system in standby / off mode.

    I did all those steps and today I only used the computer for reading stuff, replying to email, browsing, music and hardly noticed the fan turning on at all.

    Best of luck (I know its a bit sad to have all those issues, the problem is the power of the CPU and GPU making this system to run hot; we have to tweak it a bit to make it to our expectations)!

    If you know anyone with the same PC and can make him/her run the same game with the same settings and they sound different then the fan might actually not work properly.

    i have the same issues while browsing the web & even just sitting on my desk doing nothing. every time my CPU temp hits 50c the fan kicks on to a pretty audible level and it doesnt turn off till it sits at 45c for a bit. its pretty annoying considering the fan could easily be set to a much lower RPM for the 40-50c range (say 500-1000RPM?)... but it would seem the first section of the fan table starts around a annoying 2000RPM. this really isnt a heatsink, CPU or Fan design problem. the fan tables are just not well thought out. there is no reason im aware of to start the fan table at 40% of the fans designed maximum output on a laptop that in most cases will spend around half its life at these temps.

    so instead of a lower inaudible RPM for a slightly longer time span you just get to hear a loud fan RPM cycle on and off every 5-10 minutes for a shorter time span... :(

    ive tried a few different Bios and all seem to have the same fan table.
