I've been thinking about adding a second HDD where the optical drive is, but I want to still be able to use the DVD player as an external player. What kind of enclosure would I have to buy to make that work?

Also interested in this concept? And from any anyone that has already performed this, does the added benefit outweigh the loss of having an internal optical drive in the long run?

Just buy one. They are like 30-40 usd for a cheap USB powered external dvd. Not worth it finding an external enclosure.

Do you mean an enclosure for the DVD drive? Here's a link to ebay...you want a 9.5mm one External USB case enclosure SATA DVD drive | eBay
The only thing is because its a slot loading player you'll have to right click the drive in your "My computer" or w/e it's called now and eject the disk because there's no button on it.

It depends on how often you use a DVD. If you install games that require the disk in or watch a lot of movies from the DVD it may not be a good idea, but if you play games online or from Steam or the like then it may be a benefit to you.

I have a second external DVD drive as I have to copy a lot of CD/DVDs for work. It's a lot less headache to buy a manufactured external than find a good enclosure to put the internal that comes with the laptop with. In my experience external drive enclosures can be very hit-or-miss.
