I'm considering an extended warranty for my son's MX14 R2, which we purchased for him as a graduation gift this past June. Normally, I'd get a SquareTrade warranty, but we got this laptop for a ridiculously cheap price through AFFES.

Having never owned an Alienware laptop, i have no idea of how reliable these systems are. What length of warranty would you recommend? Here are my options from Dell:

    1-year: $199
    2-years: $299
    3-years: $418
Accidental: Too much to even consider

Also, does Dell ever run specials or discounts on warranties?

    Thanks!

It's a tough call. If I had the extra money, I might go for the extended warranty. I have only ever taken the one year option that comes with the system and I've bought about five different types of computers from Dell. In terms of reliability, I've had my M11X R2 since 2010 and it's still going strong. I take good care of my computers and really don't let anyone touch them :D My family thinks I'm an obsessive weirdo, but that's another story. That being said, anything can happen.

Do you like to fix things yourself or would you rather have someone to call in case of a problem? Maybe you could consider how old your son is and how he treats the computer.

A few weeks after I bought my M14X R2 Dell called me with a special deal on an extended warranty, but I didn't go for it. It still seemed a bit expensive to me, not too sure if that's the norm or not. It was the first time for me to receive a call from them.

Hope that helps. Still a tough decision though. Good luck!

Do recall the price they quoted you and about how long after you bought your M14X R2 it was? I may have to wait for that phone call. :)

They called me as well and offered 50% off the price of the warranty. I said no thanks and haven't had any problems. Really though, don't waste money on extended warranties. I got the 1 year accidental coverage to complement the standard 1 year warranty that is included as I know I won't keep the laptop more than 1 year. If he's going to keep it for 3 years Then maybe, but it also depends on how he treats his electronics. Since my first laptop in 2005 I have never needed a warranty. The call from dell came maybe 1.5-2 months after purchase. I would not depend on it though as they will certainly charge you more after purchasing the laptop if you so choose to buy a warranty then.

They called me probably about three weeks after my purchase. I do not remember what they quoted me, but as I mentioned, this is the first time I had ever received a call from Dell even though I bought many systems from them in the past.

If you´re not considering to upgrade your laptop anytime soon I´d go for the extended warranty. You never know what may happen. But if I´m buying a new system shortly, then it might not be the best deal. You can send an email to [email protected] if you have any questions about extending the warranty.

I got kind of ripped-off by AW. They eventually upgraded me to an r2 due to all the defects of the r1, but they only transferred my remaining warranty. So I got a brand new r2 with 6 months of standard/advanced remaining... And they insisted that I mail it in for repair instead of on-site service... TBH not sure what the different care actually does for you...

I just got off the phone with AW tech support and they were trying to convince me to send it out instead of having someone on-site repair.
I'm sure it's cheaper for them to have it shipped.
