Does the M14x support Toslink optical via the 3.5mm audio jack? I'm looking to buy a M14x, but my $300 headset only supports surround sound via optical output. My current Asus g74SX supports it. The 3.5mm jack actually glows red if you put your finger near it.

Can anyone confirm/deny this for me? Thanks :)

No, it doesn't. At least the R2 doesn't. If this is requirement for you, you can get USB sound card, otherwise you're going to have a big problem finding a notebook with this feature.

It doesn't, but if you really want one you might want to look into something like this

    Toslink to S/PDIF adapter

No, it does not have mini-Toslink :[ Even though my old black MacBook had one... I guess AW wasn't concerned.

I don't understand what this would do? We want to run an optical cable from the m14x into our stereo systems. This is done on Macs with a "Mini-Toslink" adapter cable that doesn't translate anything. It just passes along the pulses. So you're saying to get a USB soundcard (BTW many of them cause BSODs when attached to USB3 ports) then use this adapter to get SPDIF? Damn, I wish AW had just done the smart thing :[

No it doesn't, you'll need an adapter for this as well.

As far as I know this should be possible, though I'm not sure, but I guess you should have the correct transformer / converter to support
5.1 over coaxial I believe... You better ask a sound specialist :D

I don't think so. The best you can do is buy a USB soundcard with optical output, right?

Agreed, after some research in an audio forum.
