This is the "brand new" exchange unit they sent me for another defective one within 30 days, it also has scratches and marks on the screen that I can't photograph because of reflection.

Is this typically normal on a m14x? They tell me I cannot get another exchange and It's only 1 time thing. So now I have 2 m14x r2's that have issues...

It shouldn't look like that but most of that stuff easily snaps back together. My new unit had a defective left mouse click button. It squeaked and got stuck. So before I sent out my R1 i5 system, I used the tear down guide on this site and switched out the defective buttons with the perfectly good one (it just got replaced by dell a month ago so it was new as well). It's freakin perfect now and I finally didn't have to deal with the hassle of Dell's support.

In case you need it (it helped me a lot, and I also know I don't need an extended warranty now)

Dell screwed me the same way! a Dell repair tech destroyed my 1st one and after getting the run around about "sending it out for repairs", I told them i would flat out return it and order again if they dont exchange it a new build with no refurb parts. I was VERY CLEAR I dont want anything rebuilt to everyone i spoke with. So when i finally get the "new" machine its covered in scratches and discolored spots that dont wipe off like they are under the soft touch coat. after a little more research I found you can only do a full return in the 1st 30 days. I also found out that when dell builds a system for exchange they build it with refurb parts! thats all sorts of wack! no that its over 30 days I'm stuck and it sounds like you are too.

Moral of the story is dont believe the support people on the phone if they say they will build a new machine. If something is wrong with a build do yourself a favor and return for a refund and reorder fresh. even after clarifying all components would be new I was flat out lied to in order to keep me on the hook till my 30 days were up.

I also think I remember pulling off the plastic on the original as I do all dell systems I buy new. the 2nd one.... no fricking plastic. screw Dell! I used to order all Dell servers for my clients and now they lost themselves about 100k/yr plus me telling evey single customer of mine that will listen how shady Dells business practices are.
I even found a email address for some alienware resolution experts that are supposed to resolve problems that support wont. left them detailed email... never even got a response ( and it did go through, Checked the receive receipt in my mail server. so I about to go on another F Dell rant all day today. I will kill their business rep to as many CTO's as i can come in contact with.
