So today i called dell as my laptops warranty lasts for only another 2 months.. and about 2-3 weeks ago the LCD screen hinge started to squeek while moving it and tightened up a little bit.. Just needs a bit of greese i assume? Anyhow... a dell rep said its not covered in the warranty. But if i extend the warranty by 1 year it will be covered by the entended warranty. Is this true? That a hinge greesing isnt covered on laptops? :S Also how would i do this myself? The hinge didnt crack open or anything at all. It just simply squeeks a bit and makes my 1.6 grand laptop sound like a cheap build. Any ideas?

He's lying. The rep just wants to make a bonus for himself.

I would of gotten his name and reported him.

He's basically saying "I know you're in warranty, but I can't help you unless you buy more warranty from me".

If you're uncomfortable fixing the squeaking, I'd call back and tell the rep you have a physical problem with your laptop hinge/LCD and need a tech out due to normal usage. Leave the squeaking part out.

This reminds me of a rep a few years ago that told me if I bought a laptop from the US, I would have to buy a 3 year warranty from her in order for my laptop to have warranty in Canada. For the record, any warranty length or type works anywhere that Dell has coverage.

Most of the reps are great friendly people, but unfortunately there are a small pocket of scammers like the rep you mentioned which makes the company look bad if it's your first experience with support.

these hinges require no greasing. i would strongly advice you to not to take any such measures. That, my friend will surely void your warranty.
And yes, voodoi is correct. you dont need extended warranty to get it fixed. Its included in your standard warranty. Try contacting customer care again and tell them you are having problem with opening and closing your display and stuff. Ask for an onsite dell tech to assess the problem and only then think of alternatives.
