Hey guys! I just bought an Alienware M14x and I'm not being able to cennect my external hdd through the usb ports... any idea how this can be fixed? Has anyone here encountered a similar problem?

I have tried connecting it to all the usb ports (the external hdd is a 1TB Toshiba Canvio, usb 2.0/3.0 compatible), I have tried connecting a few other storage devices and they've worked just fine. I also tried the external hdd in 3 other computers at home and they all detect it, I never had any issues with it, it's worked just fine with any computer I've connected it to as soon as I plugged it in.

Try plugging it in again and looking for the driver and delete it and then plug it in again, this is a tricky issue it can happen if the driver got corrupted during install it
your laptop sounds safe and so does the drive

Go to start, enter "computer management" in the search. Look for "disk management" and click on it. Look for the external hdd and what file type is set.

If it shows up as RAW, it means you have to format the drive using NTFS settings. YOU WILL LOSE ANYTHING YOU CURRENTLY HAVE ON THE DRIVE IF YOU FORMAT IT. Once formatted and a letter has been assigned, the drive should work.

If the driver shows up as NTFS file system in "computer management", then the computer is recognising the connection.

If the drive doesn't show up in the list, then I am not sure why.

This could be the issue, you can also try uninstalling all USB drivers from the device manager and restart so that Windows Resets them.
Also make sure you have the latest BIOS. Let us know how it goes.
