11-november I ordered the m14x with these specs.

    i7 2670qm
    3gb gt555m
    4gb ram
    750gb hdd
    killer N wlan
    900p screen
    e.t.a. 1-december

    Total price 1108 euro.

I was convinced this is a great deal. But now after reading all the threads about heat issues I'm starting to think about cancelling my order..

Don't get me wrong, I'm pretty sure the m14x is a still a great machine. But it might not be so great for me. The main reason I'm starting to doubt about the m14x is because I always use the m11x on my lap (hence the name laptop ;) ). I wanted a bigger laptop, so the m14x was the next logical step for me. But I'm getting more and more convinced this won't be possible when playing games.

My question is, please convince me to be happy with my purchase :) or won't playing games with the laptop on my lap possible  ?

yea I think the bottom of the laptop gets scorching if the CPU is hitting 90C inside. What I'd do is test it and see, You got 21 days to return it if you don't like it or it doesn't suit your needs :)

If you mean game on your lap, its do able. I do it all the time. It only gets hot if you sit there like 4-5 hours+ gaming. Browsing the web is perfectly fine

Granted, i was playing BF3 and CPU hit 99C and GPU 78C. But its a gaming laptop! Its a powerful beast in a small footprint! Obviously its going to get warm!

Just enjoy the portable gaming! its a brilliant machine!

Well you can get it with a core i5, that might help the temps, idk if they'd change it or not. But, i really doubt you can game on your lap with most gaming laptops, the m11x is the exception for obvious reasons.

to the OP - I have only played games with the M14x on my lap. Granted, I use a laptop cooling pad (Notepal U2) and it all sits comfortably in my lap and I don't seem to get that much fan noise coming from the machine.

So, I'd say crack on with your order and just buy a cooling pad - they are inexpensive especially in comparison to what you have paid for the laptop.

In addition to a cooling pad, you can purchase IC Diamond thermal compound (does not void your warranty) for less than 20$ and once your M14X arrives, simply bring it in to a local computer shop for pasting. Thermal compound can generally reduce temps by up to 10c.

Both cooler and compound combined eliminates almost 1/4 of the heat.

Grand total for the pad, compound and tech pasting job should be less than 100$.

Note: To receive maximum benefit from the thermal compound, replacing it once a year is recommended.

    IC Diamond. Definitely.

Dell paste vs. IC7, 30 min BF3 SP gameplay max. temps.

    Processor: 99c vs. 83
    GPU: 77c vs 66c

Please note that I use Bios A03 which blows fans much faster (only under load, not in e.g browsing) than A05, which for me gained extra few degrees.

Please note that processor throttles at 85c.
