    If possible also can you post a picture of your MSI after burner?

    I managed to get a Samsung that comes with the 640M and I wanted to overclock it to match the 650 or the 660M, but I think I can only get it to 135 mhz + stable for now :(

    The idea is not totally unlogical at first since the GT 640m is technically the same card as the GT 650m and the 660m if it has GDDR5.

    However the GT 640m is downclocked for a reason and i do not recommend this card to OC as high as a GT 650m can be OCed.

    Id say +135 is good enough for this card even you could certainly OC it to about +200. But the GT 640m has failed way more qualification tests than the GT 650m has and even alot of these are not OCable to more than +250.

    Anyway to OC it further than +135 you need a VBIOS who allows you to and i dont know where to get a VBIOS for an unknown Samsung notebook.

    The Laptop I have is this one:

    Series 7 15.6

    I bought the laptop for 999.99 at Best Buy

    I'm just trying to get the best bang for my buck :p, and I just wanted a slimmer less "crowd attracting" laptop for school and work lol + I like the battery life :p.

    All the chips come off the same assembly, the only difference I'm assuming is literally the bios. I was hoping to at least match it to the 660m. The thing is super stable, but MSI after burner capped it to 135 mhz, I was wondering if there is anyway to bypass that?

    For your clock, did you do any voltage modification? 400+ mhz seems like an insane overclock! Is that the average result of the 650ms?

    The laptop is probably better for school and work than the M14x but as for gaming you wont get the results youre expecting. I tried to tell you in my first post that the GT 650m can rarely be OCed to the performance of the GTX 660m if the card is luckily a good one. But the GT 640m is a bit different and can never or at least to my knowledge achieve these results. I mean theres a reason why Nvidia made different model names. To explain this again goes too far now.

    No its not the BIOS. The chips come from the same assembly but the production process is more complex than you maybe think. I dont want to post it too detailled so i try this:

    Best result in tests after assembly gets the name and speccs => GTX 660m
    Good results in tests after assembly gets the name and speccs => GT 650m
    Medium results in tests after assembly gets the name and speccs => GT 640m

    The same order goes for i7-3920xm (outstanding result) - i7-3820qm (flawless result) - 3720qm (very good result) - 3610qm (good result) -
    i5-3320m (1 or 2 cores didnt pass the tests and got disabled) and so on.

    I hope that helps your understanding.

    Anyway you need a VBIOS mod for your specific BIOS to be able to OC it further in MSI. This mod you cannot find here since its not a Samsung forum. You should google for a VBIOS mod for your notebooks BIOS which im afraid will be difficult to find due to the lack of modders for a media notebook and not an enthusiast gamer machine. And even if you find it... cause of what i tried to explain you there wont be too much room up for your GPU.


    Im running a modified VBIOS with unlocked OC limits. +405 is only the theoretical OC i can do. But 100% stable is only below +370mhz and i have compared to many other OCers a very good GT 650m so im lucky.

    These were my best 3dmark scores so far with stable OC and temps:
    NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M video card benchmark result - Intel Core i7-3610QM Processor,Alienware M14xR2 score: P13830 3DMarks
    As you can see only 3 other people have such a good GT 650m the rest cant OC it that high.
    Most other can OC it to max +200/+250mhz and even that is giving a very nice score.

    Id recommend you to use the +135mhz OC and be happy that it runs stable thats all you can get from a "non-gaming" notebook without trouble.

    Last question is, if I can match the 650m Stock OC I should expect the same results?

    going from 645 mhz (my stock) to 745 mhz (650m Stock) will I see a giant leap in performance if everything else matches? I think the memory clocks are the same.

    P.S

    For samsung users or ppl interested in this laptop...use a mouse...touchpad sucks...hard.

    Yes in theory it would work like that since the GT 640m is only a downclocked GT 650m or an even more downclocked GTX 660m.

    But it depends on OC stability and the specific VBIOS if you can achieve stock GT 650m performance. In my opinion it should be no problem with your speccs.

    I suppose the question has already been answered, but here is my M14x's complete system overview, if it still helps. I didn't take an individual GPU-Z screenshot or an Afterburner pic.

    If you want a rough estimation of how much faster it will be, take the % overclock. Usually it is closely proportionate. E.g. a 10% overclock means 9% more performance.

    I never spent time overclocking mine because 1. I only had it on me for a week 2. it's main usage at the moment doesn't involve gaming.

    Im jealeous for your CPU^^. Maybe i get a 3820qm soon. However your idle temps look like factory paste job. I recommend a repaste to you.
    And yes if i would be a hardcore gamer id never buy a M14x either. But for a little gaming, a little work and the satisfied feeling looking at it and handle it its the best relative small notebook out there at the moment if you dont want to carry a 15"er around.

    Yeah, I intend to get a new tube of high quality paste (MX-4 or something maybe) and have an Alienware technician do it, since I also want that @#$%ing creaky hinge to, well, stop creaking. They're supposed to fix that. It feels flimsy.

    May as well since it's in the United States right now.
