I got the 1600x900 screen on my m14x, and a lot of people say they're going for the smaller screen so they can have a lower native resolution to improve frames per second when gaming. Could I get the same benefit by using an HDMI cable to output my games to my 1280x720p television?

Of course. There is no reason you couldn't drop the res on the built in monitor either. But running 720p on a tv is pretty respectable quality wise. Considering the M11x can handle 720p to a tv with good performance, using this beast should give a pleasurable gaming experience.

i dont mind turning my screen down from native res, i think its a bit over hyped on these boards IMO

(especially if its only from 900p to 720p)

It varies by the type and quality of the disply, but you will always take a noticable hit in sharpness at the very least if you run anything below native resolution. Sometimes color, vibrance, contrast, etc... is affected as well.
