I was just thinking about ways I can get an alienware laptop from the US without going through one of these middle man companies. It would involve some one on the nbr forums being kind enough to help me out.

So my first thoughts was no one would do this without being protected because it's a lot of money at risk

So my first idea was to paypal some one the money and they use that money to buy the laptop with... So if I don't receive the laptop then I'm protected from paypal and you would be protected because it's my money that would be used to order the laptop.. Postage and packing wouldn't been an issue either because of recorded delivery.

An advantage of doing it this way instead of using middle man companies is that you guys could haggle prices and hopefully drop the price for me, of course you will be wondering whats in it for you well I would say that if you drop the price buy $200 on the phone I will give you $100 of that.

Would anyone be interested in doing this ?

I would only ask the NBR community because you seem like decent and trustworthy people that know how to get a good price :p

You're crazy. I'd never trust a laptop-addict with enough of my own money to buy himself a brad new Alienware. Which country do you live in?

Taking everything into consideration (tax, chance of getting scammed, time cost etc), hunt for a decent voucher in your country is the way to go. My M14x worked out £910 delivered which is not too bad.

And you say that I could get scammed, but I couldn't because I am protected by paypal..if I don't get the product I get my money back

Paypal can be nasty when it comes to customer service, especially for item purchased outside fleabay.

I once bought a 'CDKEY' from a clearly cheap site which I can create in 3mins, and as expected it was invalid. Went to Paypal and they say since the product is delivered, they have no responsibility to investigate the nature of the product and closed my ticket. That is my lesson for £6

If you google keywords like 'paypal suck' you will find other buyers complaining about similar issue, such as seller sent a piece of brick and paypal dont care.

Just get a 10 meter HDMI cable for a tenner :D

    Both partys protected

If you insist going that route then good luck. I wouldnt be that patient to wait for the machine delivered to US then send to UK, get stopped by hmrc for import duty + VAT and finally deliver to your door. The whole process can take up to 2 months from ordering. And you never know how much the customs will charge you.

At the mo there is an EPP voucher for 16% off + another 10% back with TCB/quidco making the price fairly acceptable

I don't mind waiting for my laptop... Aready waited 6 months for the new systems to be released.. I can wait 2 more :D

By the way not all my mates had happy experience with Alienware (possibly the courier's fault), some received damaged product/ wrong spec so there is chance you will need to return or exchange the product within 28 days. Buying from US from a stranger is really full of uncertainty, it is really only do-able if you have a family member or trustworthy mate over there.

The EPP voucher is valid until 24th if you are interested. There should be tons of 10% off vouchers open to everyone available on HUKD.

Where do you stand if you transfer warranty to uk and you need to return it within the 28 days because of one of the things mentioned above ?

Can you use these vouchers with epp discount also ?

Ideally you should return the product asap within the 28 days , get refunded or exchanged before doing anything else at all. Otherwise Dell would assume it is you smashed the screen or scratched the body

I tried to put multiple vouchers together and only highest rate is recognized, TCB not yet tracked m14x, but picked up my cancelled m11x with 0.00 cashback rate :(

Things in UK might be slightly different, Dell UK always issue 15%, 10%, 5% vouchers, no way they can give you 15% off then 10% off then 5% or add up to 30% in total. Non-percentage related vouchers are usually for inspiron series

Haha now I'll get PM's asking me to do it. So just in case people get that idea: I only do this for very few select people that I can also trust. Normally I don't do this since it takes a lot of time and effort. The system could arrive with defects (as it did in Jubbin's case) and service calls have to be made to correct the flaws and/or a new system put into production and then sent out.

Use hidevolution, it's your best bet. You can't have your cake (cheap computer) and eat it too (no fees to a trusted 3rd party). Not many people have that kind of free time or inclination to save YOU money. I may sound harsh but I'm just saying how it is.

Yea the point wasn't to go asking Joker.. just thats how I did it.. and yea... we went to a lost of hastles because Dell kept sending out crappy replacement units, but in the end we got there.. after calls.. lots of calls.. and the waiting time on call.. oh dear god.. the waiting time was terrible.

You guys keep saying its risky but i am talking about buying it through eBAY..

You list it hypothetically on there with the specs.. i buy it, you get the cash and order the system from dell.

I cant see any risk there at all

Risk of chargeback goes up by using eBay. I certainly wouldn't do it.

Why dont you want to buy in HIDEvolution?

I sent a mail to them and asked if it would be possible to send the laptop like a repaired item. I mean like it is coming from SAT, so i could save about 20%taxes here in Spain. It could be a 'good trick'... We will see soon if its possible...

Yes chargeback, as in you receive the notebook and a month later decide you want your money back and file a claim with ebay/pp of fraud. They tend to side w/the buyer in cases involving ebay unless the seller can provide ample proof. I've been through it before with an iPhone sale and it sucks. I wouldn't recommend any NBR members engaging in this kind of trade unless they know they can fully trust the other party.

International PP has extra clauses and less protection. Look up the PP terms and conditions. I don't see why anyone would want to do this though? It's great for you but no so much for the person shipping it.

I buy and sell on ebay all the time motorcycles, notebooks. Sold a notebook to a girl in Florida, she received it signed for it emailed me she loved it. Then a month later I got a charge back for the full amount. Paypal took the money out of my checking account and held it for 90 days. She said she never received it. I proved she did but my money was tied up kind of sucked. You take your chance's.

The only way to persuade a stranger to do it for you is more profit, I guess.

Anyway the 300 quids off voucher is expiring in 9 hours (seems it does not require any status). You can bag a basic m14x for 700 delivered at this point of time.

+ Regarding the questions you asked in the progress thread

You do not need Wimax in Britain

There is only one 2820QM in the world, the spec is a misprint in UK site.

If you as the buyer are willing to trust someone, then simply send the person you trust, the funds in advance via International Money Order. Then the only person taking the risk is you.

I'd swap to 750GB instead of the 6GB of RAM (keep 4GB) in my opinion ;)

    Ram is cheap and expendable.

I believe it'll be safe for both of you.

Paypal has let me down before but after casting a QQ storm, I managed to get my funds from the person who did me wrong.

1,000.00 GBP = 1,575.69 CAD (in case anyone's wondering ...USD is a tad bit more).

i plan on getting a SSD for this eventually .... thats once my bank balance has recovered lol

So i dont want the 750.. i will be trying to sell the 500 anway

    ----- Edit ------

Reason for the Ram is so that i can upgrade to 8gb at a later date if i want to and only have to remove one of the ram sticks instead of both

Paddon - I can not stress this enough. How are you verifying the honesty of the person who is acting as a broker? I am going to say this up front. Buying a notebook is a lot like buying a car. You're nervous and if your not careful a pleasant experience turns into a nightmare.

Please be careful. I want your alienware experience to be a good one.

Wouldn't the ebay-paypal protection work fine, though?

The following items were bought from ebay and paypal gave me a refund:
    - 10MP camera that ended up being a 1MP camera
    - Battlefield 2 that ended up being a keygen code
    - Software that ended up being pirated files burnt on a DVD

(there's a few more things but you get the picture)

All cases refunded me 100% of what I paid for minus shipping.

Yeah but it must be kinda safe otherwise no one would ever buy anything from eBAY :D

Anyway i trust the guy we were talking on steam for ages last night and he was even trying to find ways i could do it without his help and he gave me good tech advise

Hes been a member on here for ages you guys probably all know him.. i wont be saying his name though because i dont know if he wants everyone flooding him with pms :p

The only thing im confused about is the VAT because apparently you DONT pay duty on a laptop... now i think UK has just gone up from 17.5 to 20 %

But my question is this.... am i defiantly going to get charged for this ? because i think they only charge this if its a new item being sold internationaly...

For example if it was a birthday present or something i dont think you would pay it..... seems like a very grey area atm i need more info :D

Fill in the service tag transfer form from the Dell website with all info. and warrenty is yours.

Tax is easy, let him put 500 dollar as vallue on the box, you will only pay 20% of 500 dollars tax. Best way of shipping and not get caught is Fedex.

The downside is, if your package is lost/damage, you will only get 500 dollars. Its really up to you.

Dont know. I read some people got caught with usps and not with fedex.

I have 2 m17x r3 comming my way, 1 with usps and 1 with fedex. I had customs open the usps package 1 time but never with fedex.
