Do you think it's worth buying the m14x r1 now, or should I just wait for the r2?

Also will there be a significant improvement in the GPU?

I would definitely wait. It is worth it.

    Yeah, grab the R1.

What we're expecting is a rebranded 555m anyways, so no sense in waiting.

R1 is handling everything I've thrown at it on nearly max settings too.

Depends, if you don't really need it right away wait. But if let's say summer is too far away to wait buy it now.

Plus, when the R2's are released, R1's will be cheaper (clearance), so if the OP grabs one in the summer, there's a potential to save $ if he/she gets an R1.

I love my r1 M14x, it is a great machine. I bought mine in June 2011 and paid 1180 EUR. Now, the same configuration would cost me (new) 1430 EUR lol. That is prices for Dell Holland (min. maybe 90 EUR in cupons).

Now, the graphics will get updated and you will be (at least) be able to clock higher than current 555M. New generation processor should run cooler too with smaller nm.

And I would not buy a 1 year tech, when 3 months or sooner there is a new tech. Also the display might get an upgrade and SSDs should be supported better with SATA 6Gbps on new motherboard. And there will be better cooling I believe.

New model M14x should come within max. 3 months from now I hope.

Okay thanks for your input guys. I was just asking because today is the "12 days of dell" thing and they offered an m14x with max congifuration (i7, 8gb ram, 750gb hard drive, 900p screen, etc.) for $1,199 CAD. I am really tempted to buy it since the offer expires tonight, but since the r2 will be released in 2-3 months, maybe I should just wait. Not sure lol.

This was the configuration that was offered for $1,199.99:
    Alienware M14X
    Intel® Core™ i7 2670QM processor (2.2GHz, 3.1GHz w/Turbo Boost, 6MB Cache)
    Genuine Windows® 7 Home Premium, 64bit, English
    Quasar Blue
    14.0" High Def+ (900p/1600x900) with WLED backlight
    8GB Dual Channel DDR3 at 1600MHz
    750GB 7200RPM SATA 3Gb/s
    1.5GB DDR3 NVIDIA® GeForce® GT 555M using NVIDIA Optimus™ technology
8x SuperMulti DVD±R/RW Slot Load Optical Drive
    1 Year Basic Service Plan

The thing is though I actually already have an m11x r3 which I bought in September 2011, but I feel as if it might not be that future proof. So if I were to get the m14x, I'd have to sell my m11x r3 for around $800. So basically I'm paying $555 more to get the m14x (which would come up to $1355.98 due to taxes).

From my point of view ... I would be devastated (lol) if I bought an M14X, it would arrive in 2 weeks and suddenly within a month or two there would be newer model.

    That's a pretty good price/package for Canadians.

I don't want to tell you buy it and then the R2 releases, but then if the R2 is delayed or releases later, then...

If comparing R1 vs R2 ...people are speculating that a nVidia 635 will be in it and if you compare 555 vs 635, the 635 is just a tad bit better.

Hmm really tempting lol, but you guys are right. I think I'll just wait for the m14x.
