New to the forum but have been vulturing around for a while. My question concerns my left speaker. It makes a crackling noise when volume initializes but when I plug in headphones the crackling is constant in my left ear. I have already re installed drivers and I am having trouble determining whether it's software or hardware. I'm thinking software since it carries over into headphones Any ideas??

You were saying that you concern about the speaker, but you said it make a crackling noise when you plug in a headphone <- I dont think it is the speaker problem it maybe your headphone, is it also give you crackling sound on the left speaker (with no headphone plug in)?

If you already reinstall the driver and the problem still occur then it is most likely it's hardware problem.

The headphones function perfectly with any other device. Yes I reinstalled drivers (realtek) to no avail. If it's hardware, where do you suspect the issue lies? Is it a simple left speaker replacement?? I just don't want to have to haggle with dell support about this.

if crackling noise occurs in every device i.e- laptop speaker, headphones, external audio setup etc, you can do two things
    1) since you have already re installed realtek and it didnt work ,i think you should make a backup of recovery partition using alien respawn(incase you revert back) and do a fresh windows install from the windows disc supplied with your m14x and then download and install latest driver from dell support site

    2) incase for some reason above step doesnt work, just pick up the phone and tell dell what others have been saying- " replace my damn machine"

If you still have the warranty cover, they'll do it for free, me personally have replace 3 subwoofers already, If it is only the left speaker, then when you call them they'll come to replace both for you because both left and right are tied together, only the subwoofer is separated.
