The best processor to date, for the M14x laptop is the Extreme edition Intel core I7 2920xm.

For one, I'd like to ask whether this CPU is worth having in a laptop this size, heat I suppose would be a big problem, and whether the extra .5Ghz speed upgrade from my 2630qm is worth anything is something I'll have to consider. I know most people recommend the I5 for this laptop because of heat reasons, and they also say that it is a marketing scheme to have an i7, and that it has no effect on performance. Anyway, despite my questions.

Does anyone know if this CPU is retailed anywhere.

    Can't find it anywhere

If you wanted to upgrade the cpu, I suggest the 2760. The 2920xm is an unlocked processor, IIRC. I couldn't tell you if the m14x is capable of over clocking unlocked CPU's, but if it can, I don't think the m14x has the cooling capacity to handle it. I saw a few on ebay, but idk about retailers. But its a very expensive processor, even a retailed version of the 2760 is around 400. The 2920xm would cost 700 to a grand.

You can call dell and see if they will sell you one and if its totally compatible with the m14x. Keep in mind, the 2960xm, which is the successor to the 2920xm, costs 900 as an alienware m18x upgrade. So that 900 is the cost when upgrading from the 2670m. Means its probably well over a grand. Also, if you still want the 2920xm, its phased out by the 2960m like i stated, you can look for that instead. (idk of the compatibility)

Yea its really not worth trying to run a 2920xm/2960xm in a laptop this size as even the locked processors have heat issues. I would recomend just staying stock processor wise. What you looking to use the extra power for if you don't mind me asking? The 2630 is good enough for pretty much any game out for quite some time. ;)

here is a link to an extreme processor: INTEL i7 2960XM 3.7GHz quad OEM mobile processor

Those XM Edition of the CPU would worth on those laptop like the M17x & the M18x, because it have better cooling and the GPU that those laptop offer (usually) wouldnt bottleneck the CPU. And for the heat, I guess it would even overheat on idle , the standard CPU still give the M14x hard time trying to keep it cool, let alone an Extreme Edition. I would recommend if laptop is a M18x or something similar, otherwise it would be just a waste of money.

Yeah with it being XM I would stray away. I would recommend going with the highest QM CPU, which is the 2860 I think now, right?

yea thats the fastest one out atm, but the 2630 he has now should do fine in almost any game he prob plays. The GPU will bottleneck before the CPU does. ;)

Best place to get it would be eBay, exactly the link that bigtonyman posted. I spoke with a Dell rep from Canada a few weeks ago and the price she quoted me for the 2920XM or 2960XM was "$3,944.99 plus shipping fee and sales tax".

 That's overkill! Just want to double check, $3,944.99 Just for the CPU only? If so then that's would be plain stupid.

i'd believe it at this point. they wanted to charge me $700 for a 1080p screen upgrade and then another $1,075 for a single 580m. I said no thanks lol. Still trying to find a 1080p screen that fits and is cheaper though. :(

Thanks for the reply's. I don't think I'll ever touch my CPU. Runs fine as it is. With the M14x's coming out with more and more restrictions. Like Bios A08, and its SATA speed cap. And that decrease in GPU performance I heard. I think I'll be keeping this laptop a while. I love it now and nothing needs to change.

If I change anything It will be the Screen. I've got a few clumps of dead pixels here and there.

Might upgrade the RAM to 1600mhz, but thats not much of a boost.

If your still under warranty, call up dell and they should agree to send a replacement screen. ;)
