    Hey all,

I just wanted to make sure everyone was aware of my recent tech service w/ Dell's Alienware over the phone support. Like a lot of posts I have been reading there have been a ton of issues with gaming and CPU temps getting extremely hot. I, myself have been pretty worried that this could do extreme damage long-term to my brand new laptop of not even 4 months old. I was getting anywhere between 95-100C degree temps while gaming even with the turbo boost off. I called Dell's support line to see what could be done and make aware that this is an on-going issue with a lot of people out there. He advised to have a tech come out and replace my heat sink, assembly fan and re-apply thermal paste on my heat sink. The parts were ordered the same day and the tech arrived the next day. I must say I was really impressed with the quickness that everything was taken care of.

Once the tech arrived on time for the appointment he took apart my entire laptop within minutes and notified me that there was noticeable dust/hair that was caught in my fan. I like many here have good ventilation for my laptop, with a cooler, but was surprised to see how much stuff was in the fan itself. He also advised me that thermal paste was entirely gone on my heat sink after only a mere months of using the laptop normally. He explained that the laptop was trying to keep itself cool was best as possible, but couldn't because the paste was literally gone ha. He also applied paste towards my CPU/GPU, he said this was not usually done by normal techs, but he would make an exception since it's still a pretty new laptop.

I was extremely happy with the service I received and would recommend anyone that has ANY issues with Heat/High CPU temps and is still under warranty to have this taken advantage of this service. I have noticed that my Core temps have dropped and stay around 87C degrees even while gaming.

Oh yea he also replaced my motherboard for some reason too. He said that since he was taking apart the entire laptop that he replace it for no charge as well.

Let me know if anyone else has had the same experience for!

    Regards,
    Chris

After speaking with intel support, the thermal spec for these CPUs is 100C. I don't know where people are getting these higher temps from. The reason we don't see above 100C on anyones CPU is because of the throttling. Without it, the temps would just keep rising.

You wondering why I get those high temp from? I got it from Gaming - either BFBC2 or Crysis 2.

Do you still have turbo boost on or off? I wonder if they have a new fan/heatsink combo that can pump more airflow, did they look different? Mine is 3 weeks old and hits 95-100 in gaming with turbo boost on.

Hah, thermal paste doesn't just disappear, it was never there to begin with. And normal techs do apply thermal paste, because without it, thermal conductivity into the heatsink is terrible.
Don't get me wrong, I'm glad dell fixed the issue they created, but don't think you got any special treatment, you should have never had those issues to begin with.

Well, I'm havin 99° gaming BFBC2 or portal 2(which has no sense cuz portal 2 is not a high demanding graphic or cpu, so is wierd)

Most source games are highly cpu dependent, and portal two is also graphically intense, I don't know where you got the whole not demanding part. Perhaps dell just sucks at applying thermal paste or used very crappy thermal paste.
Here are some results from a fellow NBRer with a repaste

Sorta on topic, but do you think a dell technician could come out and apply new thermal paste for you? (Sorry if this all sounds broken but im sick) Like for example, if I were to buy IC Diamond paste off newegg, could I have a technician come out and apply it for me?

I doubt dell would send a technician out to do that. If you could prove that you are having overheating issues, dell may send a tech to replace your heatsink, but I don't think you'd have any luck getting them to come to your house just to replace thermal compound.

I would just recommend keep calling and telling them your temps are getting to hot. They sent a tech for me since my temps were about 100 degrees C after playing a game for a few minutes.

I don't get how you have such high temps though.

I bought mine about two months ago and when I ran prime95, the CPU never went over 90C

Really? That's pretty good. Well I'm waiting for my new laptop cooler to come in, but if my laptop still gets anywhere from 95-100C. I'm calling to replace the entire laptop. They told me that they wouldn't unless they exchanged parts a few times, but I don't think its acceptable for the amount of money I paid for this thing ya know?
