Hi all, question is pretty much the same as the title. Has anyone had any luck in using their iPhone (or any phone capable really) with setting up a wireless hot spot on their phone and then were they able to connect to the internet with it?

Looking to order my m14x in January but was just wondering if this was possible. If it is i may boost up my monthly data allowance so i can use the m14x on the go for light internet browsing and maybe even a little bit of Minecraft, assuming that doesn't take up a lot of data and if i will be able to play over a 3G connection without lagging myself and everyone else out.

    Thanks in advance!

Yes it is possible. It acts like any other wifi hotspot. I currently use my Verizon Droid Charge and connect all the time. There are ways of making your phone a hotspot for free or you can just pay the extra to your cell provider for the feature. However, if you are using an iPhone and jail breaking it in order to use a 3rd party application to hotspot, there have been reports of the cell provider throttling your speeds. This is why I just pay for the feature. I wouldn't want to risk getting my awesome LTE speeds throttled. I also have unlimited so going over my data allowance isn't a worry of mine.

I did just this the other night when my broadband conked out on me. I have the iPhone 4S. On 3G (4 bars of signal in my house) it was more than fast enough to browse - but forget streaming video - it took about 2 hours to buffer an episode of Dexter in low res.

Thats the thing i'm worrying about but i can't seem to find any information from O2 about tethering.
Yeah, light web browsing is the thing i'd use it for most of the time. Do you have web tethering enabled on your contract details or have you jail broken your phone and just use the data you get with the plan?

Well I'm not paying any extra for it with my plan, but it isn't jailbroken either. I just upgraded to the 4s before when I had the 3gs the hotspot option wasn't there.

UK is a bit different but I went to o2's site to check. If you click the link that says "why might I need data" when adding data packages you will see . . .

"If your phone is compatible, all our data Bolt Ons will let you tether. We won't charge you anything extra, but we'll take any data you use out of your data allowance."

So you can tether with the built in tethering option already on the iPhone without paying more. You are just using data out of your allotment. That's kind of nice. Most carrier's in the US charge for the ability to hotspot which I think is stupid.

Thanks for looking that up, Joel. I get 1GB a month at the moment but i may get another one to make it so i get 2GB a month. I'm sure that would be more than enough for light browsing

I've used my iphones for the last 2 years as wireless hotspots for connecting to the internet with my laptops.

Very easy to do, now switched to a galaxy s2 and use that.

Obviously check your data plan, mines on 3 with an unlimited data plan.
