I've been on this forum for awhile, mostly reading posts of other people, and have had 3 Alienwares -- a m11x R1, a m14x R1, and a m14x R2, the last of which I currently have. I like it, but have been looking around to upgrade now that I'm done with school and no longer need as much portability.

Previously, I preferred Alienware's designs to pretty much all of its competitors. However, the competitors have been catching up, and some things "Alienware" have been going down in quality, in my opinion, to a "Dell" standard (for example, the A/C adapter has changed from an Alienware design to the generic Dell design, and the latest iteration is now a smooth feeling power cord instead of a soft-touch rubberized). In addition, I haven't had particularly good luck with any of my Alienwares. To name a few things, MoBos replaced (yes, plural), a hard drive failure, a battery replaced, A/C adapter replaced, and needing new screen hinges.

Anyway, the new GT60 from MSI caught my eye. It's not particularly unattractive, and the fact that I could order a 15" laptop with a GTX 780m is insane. I haven't decided whether to keep my current Alienware M14x R2, I'm weighing the option of what to do upon receiving the new laptop which I ordered.

I'm hoping that I don't regret my decision to try something new, and I'll definitely stick around here for at least the time I continue to own the m14x. I'd be happy to discuss how I think the GT60 compares, if anyone is interested, after I receive it.

    Best,

Wait for the up and coming M14x R3 in less than 7 days with its newer design and cold metal aluminum body with geforce 7 series gpu, haswell cpu and ips display option.

It is not insane as there were 15" holding 680m.

    The answer is wait.

I don't see the point of ordering a 15" notebook when portability isn't important anymore as I can't seem to find huge advantages compared to a 14" display.
Why not going for something bigger and more powerful then?

I was a little vague. To clarify, daily or almost hourly portability is no longer an important factor because I no longer have to double as a pack mule :). I don't want to be in the class of a rig big enough to be more powerful than a 780m. Maybe if the m17x offers 780m SLI ;)

Yes, they are interesting, and I can't wait to see one in-person. The 17 looks especially interesting, a configuration with the GTX 780m seems a lot more reasonable than the old style with the 680.

I was disappointed by Laptop Magazine's review of the 14, though, where the brightness of the IPS display was low, and because the fans still got loud when playing a game. I was hoping the new design would fix some of that, but the crazy fan was like still required for cramming the GTX 765m in there. I stand behind my switch to the GT60.

Someone else in my family is considering one of the new Alienwares (if I sell my R2!), though, so I'll be around! Thanks for following-up, Luis.

Yeah, those are some of the things that we need to take a deeper look on. And no worries that's why we are here!
