Dell screwed me the same way. after being lied to when I tried to verify I would be getting a brand new replacement machine built with all new parts, I got my replacement system with none of the plastic either! I looked online and found that when dell builds a replacement system they build it to the specs you ordered, but they use refurbished parts!
I vaguely remembered hearing something about this before, so I made sure to verify with every rep that I would not get anything built with refurb parts or I would just return it and reorder. I was still in the 21day return window after the tech that came to fix a small crack in a panel completely fubar'd my brand new r2. well after fighting to get a replacement as opposed to sending it out to get fixed, I get a supposedly new machine with no plastic and a housing/build quality that looks worse than my r1 that was over a year old at the time! finger prints on the palm rest UNDER THE SOFT-TOUCH COATING! discolored spots on the lid and uneven seems everywhere. when I put my ssd in the supposedly "new" replacement there were part stickers on top of other part stickers in a different color. Im guessing thats a pretty damn good indicator that at the very least the palmrest was refurb. it was probably returned because of the prints on the palm rest that wont wipe off. they are not eye popping but defiantly visible and annoying as hell. My guess is when the last owner returned it they stripped the parts and waited for someone who is no longer in the refund window. then they stick me with the junk. pretty irritating considering it was over a $2000 configuration, not some base model.

I tire of telling this story, yet feel the need to when I see posts such as yours or when someone asks if dell is a good brand to go with. I cant say it would have been handled any better by another manufacturer but I couldn't even get anyone to admit it wasn't brand new!

Long story short... F Dell... A story I now tell almost daily any chance I get, to as many sysadmins/CTO's I have the honor of sharing this warning with.

    sorry your getting the shaft...

i had a similar thread but 3rd time was a charm for me.

in the end i ended up getting a $1400 configuration for $888 shipped after outlet coupon. it just took a lot of phone calls and about 2weeks of not being able to use my laptop to get there.

its really a lotto with Dell. but sadly being a fan of portable power there arent many options out there to choose from. if there was my business would have went elsewhere...

I would be interested in seeing a picture of these "alignments issues."
