I have been using a Asus N550JK for a short time, and am in the process of selling it, really awesome two small dual fans are super quiet even when gaming. I have decided to go back to my Alienware 14 for the superior keyboard which I can actual see.

The Alienware 14 is by not means a weak machine, it is a heavy duty powerhouse with a solid build. Although now I am using it again, what's up with this things fan being so loud?

Is there any way I can get this thing to be more quiet. The fan is only quiet on battery. The fan tis like a hair dryer when playing a game while plugged in.

I am suspecting the GPU temp which runs fairly cool, has the fan profile in the BIOS set to ramp up way to high at low temps.

Can this thing be tamed as not to be a noise maker?

Use Hwinfo to create a custom fan profile as per your needs.

Have you checked the temperatures of it?

Not exactly just put off the back cover like the M17x R3 and just remove the heaksink, then put on some new paste. No way I all fully tearing down the entire unit just to change a grain of rice paste. Thanks anyway, I have seen this video before however.
As for HWinfo, already know about that one.

Yes have been there before. Problem with this is the profile once set to a reasonable level, once under load the temperature get way to high. The heatsink can almost burn the finger tip, so I wonder how stressful this would be on the entire PCB as it heats up.
I wasn't able to find a decent setting to control heat under load. Great for if the user is not doing next to nothing to stop the fan loud cycling. Although it is just a work around that has to be setup, and not so great one at that

Sure the temperatures are reasonable to an extent when loading the machine, around 80c on the CPU and about 60-70c on the GPU during gaming, e.g. Watch Dogs.

The fan is very loud exiting out so much air, the machine doesn't get hot at all. There is plenty of hot air coming out from the heat sink and fan, but at what cost, ridiculously loud noise emissions!

I find it very sad this large for 14" heavy duty machine near 3kg has to be so dam loud. Looking underneath there is plenty of ventilation to draw air in, and decent heat sink setup.

It is making me feel rather angry that I have Alienware 14 (I pick up when going on the move) sitting on my desktop next to my actual desk PC, and the Alienware 14 is very loud constant fan ramps, for god sake it is louder that than my rooms heat pump when that is cranking.

Can you people at Dell look into changing the fan profile to more sensible. Why on earth does Dell must have it to ramp the fan up really loud at just 63c on the GPU, this really is unnecessary. Please look at or put forward making the fans in the system more workable, e.g. set the fan profile (stock) to be more forgiving.

I don't want to have to sell this unit as I do like the design and build, although I am desperately unhappy with the noise. I am willing to do anything to get rid of the noise (in a functional way) so I can keep the machine. Although there is really nothing remaining I can do, please Dell fix the noise.

btw. I have owned the M17x R3 for many year now (very happy with this), and yes fans are loud to a certain extent when gaming but not as bad the Alienware 14. When I am just doing day to day stuff the M17x R3 is fine at the noise levels, not bad and acceptable, but the Alienware 14 only need a few things open and hardly under any load the unit it noisy as hell which is stupid!
