Hey guys, can anyone recommend a monitor for the M14x ?

i was thinking this one here: Samsung SM2233RZ 22" 3D Monitor
    Samsung SM2233RZ 22" 3D Monitor (Gloss Black): Amazon.co.uk: Computers & Accessories

its only 1680 x 1050 resolution but i think that will run better on the M14x than a 1080p one, its also affordable and works with the Nvidia 3D glasses

What do you guys think ?

Can you recommend anything different ?

Just by reading some of the reviews, it seems as if the samsung 2233RZ is better. Not that I would know cause I have never seen them but just by reading reviews online.

The HDMI is not a big issue. You can always buy HDMI to DVI-D cable online.

svideo.com sells quality cables super super cheap and I have bought from them before. I just don't know if they ship outside of the US. You would have to call and ask.

Just to add: an HDMI to DVI-D would not support audio, only video so make sure your not gonna use it for audio if plan on getting it.

Nah i dont like the idea of that :S

The acer seems good but it seems that there are many dodgy ones out there seen a few reviews complaining about buzzing noises and back lighting bleed

The acer looks like an Alienware styled monitor as well, love the orange on black

I would want to use it as a tv as well, i don't know what the difference is between a 3D monitor and a 3D tv, anyone know ?

Do you think putting the resolution down to 1680 x 1050 on the acer will look ok ?

The Acer one is most definitely better. I have one. :)

This is the only site whose reviews matter, IMO:

    Acer GD245HQ

They measure the panels from a competitive gaming standpoint. So fast refresh rates (no ghosting), etc.

Why are you getting 3D anyway? 3D will be a tough thing to pull off with the relatively weak 555GT. I bought mine just for the 120hz part...fast response for games.

Does it effect fps just from switching from 2d to 3d ?

i just thought that if i put the resolution up to 1680 x 1050 which isn't far from the native resolution of 900p it should be able to play games ok in 3d.

    What do you think ?

thanks for the link though very helpfull

Yes, you effectively cut your computer's horsepower in half when going to 3D - because the way the 3D effect is done is by having two images simultenously displayed. Do some more research before you decide to invest into 3D with an M14x. I think it will be a waste of money, IMO. You should have a faster GPU.

i think the 555m is a good graphics card tbh, i think it could easily play l4d2 with good fps in 3D, but crysis 2 is a big no go lol

Yeah, if L4D2 and the like is all you're shooting for. All I am saying is it is like ~$400 to invest in 3D...so make sure you can play what you want. :)

How 3D is it with the nvidia glasses and 3D monitor ?

only slightly or is things literally jumping out of the screen at you ?

    --------edit---------

also is there any benfit to having a 3D monitor if you dont use 3D, like for example higher quality picture ?

I have never used 3D but yes, 120hz is a huge benefit for response time in 2D gaming, especially online MP FPS.

Ok so i think it would be a good idea to get this acer monitor and put the settings to 3D if it manages to play it ok with good fps then i can go buy these rip off expensive glasses :D if it is bad in 3D then i have a good monitor and i can use it as a good tv for 2D

The Acer monitor is solid. Asus made one too which is really good.

The 120hz screen will help in 2D mode also. Even things like dragging icons on the screen will seem smoother. Also, you know how anything above 60 FPS is pointless on a regular monitor as it won't even be displayed? Well with a 3D monitor, that number is now 120FPS. So, now movements in games will be even smoother.

I don't know what the "FPS limit" on the human eye is, but I can tell you that when I played on a friends 3D monitor (in 2d mode) it felt much smoother to me. He had a desktop with a GTX 480 though that was cranking out 200+ FPS (on TF2). I'm not sure how 3D will fair with newer games on the GT 555M.

I know the price looks a little high but is not lets say you want to buy the 3D monitor and the glasses separate you going to pay at least $160 for the glasses so the monitor itself is $540

Could not be happier with mine and i came from a WFP3008 2560x1600 screen. Speedy and i both ordered on the same day as we were waiting for a 27inch 3d screen and yeah it rocks.

Super bright and WAY higher then 300nits like was stated closer to 500 actually which i am picky about my brightness.

Colors are fantastic for a TN panel and Viewing angles as well are above average .

Overall i would personally give it around a 8.5/10 mainly because yeah its expensive but the glasses are included which is a bonus but your paying for them and the Stand they use for the monitor should be replaced ASAP which speedy and i both did right away :)..

Everytime i play a game in 3d on this thing my jaw is hanging on the floor and there is a puddle of drool underneath that :D.

Also a MAJOR bonus is the fact it supports the PS3 natively with 3d and works absolutely fantastic for someone who wants an all in one and i think that is a great selling point since many PC gamers also run some console games from time to time like myself.

Oh wow. I had no idea. So, you can do 3D gaming with the same NVidia glasses? Have you tried this? I own a PS3 and would love to give a whirl every now and then.

The main reason I am interested in 3D monitors is for true 120hz (not the motionflow junk that duplicates the frames), but I'd love to watch a 3D bluray movie from time to time on my PS3.

Yes the supplied Nvidia glasses work with the PS3 right out of the box :).

Trust me when i say that if you were waiting for a 3d monitor like i was then this is THE one to buy period.

I wanted one when they first came out but 23-24 inches was just to darn small but 27 is perfect for everything .

This is probably the best investment on a PC i have made in years truthfully and i sold my 30 inch WFP3008 the same day this thing arrived so i would say i am beyond happy with it :D.

Yes it crushes that one if its the same one i had a chance to use .

Speedy had 3 of those at one time and shipped one to me to try out for a week but the brightness and color were terrible by comparison.

I know the 27 costs alot which would make many people really think twice but man this thing is amazing and i am blown away everytime i use it be it in 3d or 2d.

120hz gaming even without 3d is just so much smoother and just general computing IE web browsing etc just feels so much better on the eyes.

As i said above if you are contemplating on purchasing a 3d screen this is the one to get now , in time there will be other choices and possibly better but for the moment this is it .

The Panel Manufacture is LG so even though its an acer product that has no bearing on the actual screen quality .

Speedy and i were abit hesitant on the cheaper looking build quality compared to our Dell screens we had but at the end of the day what matters is how the screen looks and for a TN screen this one just rocks big time .

Also the big plus like i outlined above is the console compatibility which is just a huge plus in my book. Might not be for everyone but the fact that it just works perfectly is great to have . Playing PS3 in 3d on this thing feels perfect :)

Man... I want one now, but if I bought it, I would almost no money. It took me several years to save enough for the M14X I bought. I have about $850 to go into college. Spending $700 on just a monitor might not be a wise decision for me. And I still need to buy an SSD for the M14X. Ahhh! So many things to buy, so little money!

Oh, and is that monitor capable of acting as a TV? (as in, accepting a coax cable input)

    No coax input ..

I am sure you could find some way to route cable into it as most cable boxes have HDMI .

Considering your budget yeah it might not be a good choice. Its pricey for sure .

    Start playing the lottery :).
