Hey guys just picked up a m14xR1 and upgraded motherboard to a m14xR2... I have come from a m18xR2 and miss my extreme cpu. Wondering what a 3920xm or 3940xm will run like in it or am I wasting my money?

I have seen people with a m14x r2 with extreme CPUs, but I don't know if they had any heat problems.

Hey there DanXbix. I don't have the AW M14X R2 but I do have an AW 14 (Haswell 2013 model) and I took the risk and installed an i7 4930MX CPU. It has been pretty stable so far overclocked to 4.1 GHZ and temps are okay (70's to 80's Celcius) for video rendering under load. I do have modified cooling cooler that use desktop fans and other modified cooling gear to help it keep cool. I'm planning to modifiy my cooling geat more to four more fans installments in my cooler and two ETS laptop extractors for the vents. I think the i7 3940XM should run fine in your M14X R2 since I hear it draws less heat and has better overclocking potential. You can read more of my findings here.

There are some threads about this, it can be done however it's not officially recommended nor supported. It could have heat issues or could require more power than what the PSU can provide.

Will the m14xR2 also support a m17xR2 240watt supply? as i think that may be a way i can get arround it and some heavy cooling mods. i mainly will be compiling and doing thing in linux. so GPU won't be active when running at full load and possibly Overclocked.

It's more likely to support the M17x R4 PSU. The M14x R2 and M17x R4 were released the same year.

@ DanzBix My 330W PSU power brick I am using on my Alienware 14 Haswell is the same brick I was using on my AW M17X R2 just to give you an idea. It works perfect so far.

The 3940XM is only 10W more than the 3840QM/3740QM. A 330W PSU is overkill for any Alienware 14/M14x - you won't be able to overclock it enough to utilize all of that. The 240W PSU for the Alienware M17x R4/Alienware 17 will suffice, and it's much less bulky. But if you want the 330W, go for it, lol.

Cool. How much did you get it for? There is a seller on Amazon that is selling their i7 3940XM for $400.00 plus $5.00 shipping.

Hi mate yes went perfectly! i can run machine at x41 so about 4.1Ghz and great temps. Perfect for compiling things within linux mint! will upload some pics soon. Really want to upgrade to the new model as i need VT-D support via Chipset & Bios. Still unsure if the 14 can do it and may need unlocked bios which isn't out yet.

It sucks cause I want an unlocked bios for the AW 14 too but looks like something has to be soldered for it to work.
