So basically I want to know how many people here have a working M14x R2 specifically?

I'll be getting mine soon maybe by this Friday at the latest and I need some good news, seeing all these problems with the m14x makes me a little bit uneasy

    To Do List:
    Clean Install Windows 7
    DO NOT Update BIOS
Check CPU/GPU Temps - While Gaming
    Make Sure Hardware/Software Components Work

    Anything else I'm missing?

Mine worked fine since day one, I only replaced the hard drive with an SSD by myself. Concerning your To-Do-List, I don't see the need of
a clean install if you don't change your harddrive, generally there's not much "unuseful" stuff included on a brand new AW system. A BIOS update isn't forbidden generally, it just seems
to be the case that some m14x have some problems with the latest version of it, but I think you will receive your AW with the latest BIOS and this won't be a problem.

Checking temps and components is no bad idea, and for gaming, just prop the back of the notebook up a little, this can lower your temps up to 10°.

One last thing: enjoy your system :D

If you get windows 8 you dont really need to do a clean install. All i would say is update your os FULLY before doing any bios/driver updates, as the early windows 8 was slightly unstable.
mine has had no problems so far apart from day 1 when i got too eager and installed the nvidea driver b4 updating windows 8, causing crashes as soon as i logged in. also just make sure you create all your recovery media. always a good idea with a new laptop as they may be slightly unstable at first.

I have a new m14x R2. I did a clean instal of Windows 7. I have an mSATA Samsung PM830 256GB and its my only drive. I have BIOS A09. I have the latest nVidia drivers, 310.70. I have AlienFX installed and the basic Alienware boot / logon screen.

I've never had a problem with this machine and I can't understand why anyone else does. Personally, I believe some people are just abusive with their hardware, and by that I mean slamming the lid shut, eating over the keyboard or spilling a drink, setting(damn near dropping) it on the desk or into a bag.. Also, I doubt few folks actually make an effort to maintain their system with Ccleaner, Defraggler, or do any Windows registry tweaks or consistently update drives and such. People say they do, but I don't believe it.

    My best advice:

Fire up the system when it arrives and see how it performs. You'll be pleased. But after that make sure you check the following:

    1) Go into the BIOS and make sure the storage mode is set to AHCI - mine was on RAID when it shouldn't have been.
    2) Perform the clean Windows install if you want. I recommend it. I didn't bother doing an AlienRespawn because that crap is useless. My opinion, in any case.
    3) Install the drivers in the order listed under the READ THIS FIRST forum post. That is definitely recommended!
    4) Patch up Windows and get everything up to date and running smoothly.
    5) Tweak your Windows 7 registry per this guide's "Tweaked" settings: Black Viper’s Windows 7 Service Pack 1 Service Configurations | Black Viper | www.blackviper.com
    6) Knock out this Windows registry tweak as well.. I mean, you paid for quad core system, so why not utilize it to its max potential? Windows 7 & Core Parking .... a *better* way to Turn It OFF ....
    7) Install your games and have fun!!

If you have issues man, please send me a PM and I will help you as best as I can. Fixing a nonfunctional computer is a bit of a hobby.. just a bit. ;)

Well don't be so scared for it after reading the forums here, most people come here when they have problems, so it looks like machine may be going to hell, while it is far from truth.

I have my R2 since October and it runs great. I don't even think you need to do clean install, there is no bloatware.

I have had my m14x R2 (shipped with Windows 8) for a bit over a month. No problems at all, including heat. In fact it's running a lot cooler than really necessary. I did repaste it with IC Diamond yesterday (it's a huge pain) and now the temps are even lower. I'm on Bios A09, which is what it shipped with. I'm probably not going to ever flash it unless I have a problem.

Agreed, clean install isn't necessary. The only thing installed I didn't care for or need was the power DVD stuff. Nothing else was installed.

Unfortunetly I had more bad luck with my laptop so I decided to get a refund.
Instead I ordered Asus G46VW which is Asus versions of 14'' model http://rog.asus.com/notebook/14-2/g46vw/

    It comes with a i7 3630QM
    8GM Ram
    660M
1366x768 Reso - Later in the future there will be a 1600x900 option
    Windows 8 - I'll downgrade to Windows 7
    No Optical Drive though

Best of all is probably the thermal, it uses a dual fan system, 1 for CPU and 1 for GPU so load and idle temps are insane from what people tell me who have their system

    All for $1170

But anyways I wish you guys good luck on your systems
