I have been waiting patiently for some comparisons of the two video memory sizes on offer in the M14x.

Where are they all! I know there are some 3 gb machines on this forum.

I know the differnece is supposed to be negligible but I want proof!

check the benchmark thread there is no proven difference between the two that I have seen. I have pushed 15800+ with 3dmark06 and the 2720 qm processor as well as 1800+ 3dmark 11

You don't need to wait for comparisons here, look at what difference video memory makes in stronger cards, and draw your conclusions from there.

This. If it makes no noticeable difference in performance on much faster cards, it obviously won't for the slower 555m.

I believe there is 10 points out of 1800ish of difference in 3dmark 11. That is about 1/180 or 0.56% if you like :D
Saw the screenshots in other forum

that 10 point difference could also be by processor clocks temp and system load.

Hell, that difference could be from differing ambient temperatures.

(Cooler cards will run "better". I've beaten people's 3Dmark scores with lower speeds, thanks to my watercooled cards running 40°C lower under load.)

Uh...no. In theory this is true, but the difference is so marginal the temp difference would have to be extreme. Even a liquid nitrogen cooled CPU is not any faster at the same clock as an air cooled CPU.

Unless of course one CPU is turboing higher due to lower temps.

Is the 100$ worth it? if I play with FHD with Med~High settings, 1.5GB will be enough? or 3GB?

1.5GB will be enough. The GPU is not nearly powerful enough to take advantage of anything over 1.5GB of memory. :(

If you are needing more than 3GB VRAM, you are needing a graphics card with more power than a GT555

This has already been asked in at least two other threads.

You know, just as an anecdote, my desktop has 2x69750's (modded to 6970's) with 2GB of GDDR5. And it runs games at 5760x1080, and I can't turn the details up high enough, or the AA in most cases.

So no, there is NO reason for a mobile GPU to need any more than 1GB currently, much less 1.5GB, and CERTAINLY not 3GB.

Do you have anything to back that up, or are you just spouting opinion? Because I can show you results if you like.

Had a discussion about this before with some of my fellow engineering students who are computer geeks. We took it to an overclocking board and we had Shamino, maybe you've heard of him, run some benchmarks for us. I didn't save the results but if you are that worried it I might be able to dig them up. Although the forum changed software and I don't know if the archived board is still up.

    Please post your results though.

How bout running a benchmark with GPU fan at 100% speed, and then running the same benchmarks with the fan at say 40% speed, leaving everything else the same.

Anyways, we came to the conclusion that while the physics is there that it would be faster colder, that even with a difference greater than 100*C, the difference was not great enough that it was outside the margin of error.
