How do you have to turn it on, software? A switch on the side of the computer?

If it's software, check the options of the program that deals with the card. Make sure you have it set to start automatically when Windows starts. You can also check msconfig (type "msconfig" in the search bar in the Start menu) and go to the Startup tab and see if the program that you use has a check mark. If not, check it, apply and restart.

If it's something like a switch on the side, just keep that in the on position.

I believe what you're wanting to do is go into your connection options and tell your laptop to auto-connect to the networks you use. :)

edit - it could also be you have your power use settings put so that the wifi isn't turned on. I know that I have mine set to be on with full and balanced power use, but minimum it's set to turn off.
