i have an acer laptop with built in card reader but it cannot accept a 512 mb SD card. does anyone know how to get round this problem [?]

It has to be a problem with your SD card, not the reader. The only memory card that has a preset limit (AFAIK) is "Smart" Media. I think that's why it's seldom used anymore.
Try a different SD card.

A 512MB limit seems fishy. It might be having trouble reading that brand or card, even if the card is not faulty itself. Did you look for an update for the reader on the Acer site?

hi brian, yes i've looked for an update but not found one - looked for a firmware update there but no luck & I have no wish to play with bios settings when the pc runs perfectly ok otherwise.
I seem to remember reading somehere that the acer ferrari 3000lmi 4 in 1 card reader cannot support an sd card over 256mb (only read this a month after I got the 512 card)
sd card is a dane-elec with "toshiba" on the back.
don't want to waste money on another card so do you have a link for an update I can use ???

I believe I remember reading some issue with the Acer line regarding their SD card readers. I believe it turned out to be the brand of media used. The card worked elsewhere, but when they tried in the Acer notebook, no luck, says it's not formatted. I believe the solution was to get a brand named card. Can't guarantee this is the same issue you're having.

There is no problem to read SanDisk SD card, 512 MB, using 3 in 1 card reader on my aspire.
