Anyone able to tell me, or point me to a good resource to find out, what processors I can upgrade to on my 9920G?

From what I've read, I have need to be careful not to choose one that will overheat the system. So how do I find out what the limitations of the board are?

I had an earlier post about my laptop croaking (dead motherboard). Which Acer wouldn't fix because it said the mobo wasn't available anymore. It IS, in fact, still available from the factory, so I've found one through an exchange program and will be replacing it myself. Which makes me think that Acer is a bunch of monkeys - but that's another saga altogether.

Since the processor on this thing is a little underpowered, I thought I might upgrade that while I'm at it.

Any thoughts and suggestions are much appreciated.

What processor do you currently have?

What do you use your notebook for? What are your notebook specs and why do you feel it is underpowered? How much is your budget? CPU upgrades don't usually give much benefit and can be relatively costly, compared to the more important (limiting factor) HDD and/or cheaper memory upgrades. For example, if your budget is $300, then a good SSD will be 10x better than any CPU upgrade. But for $50, maybe just stick with a 4GB memory kit.

    It's a Intel Centrino Core 2 Duo T5250 (1.5 GHz, 667 MHz FSB, 2 MB L2 cache).

I am a web/graphic designer ... so I'm often running multiple Adobe programs at once.

I've already upgraded the RAM to 4G (currently running a 32-bit version of Vista - so more RAM would be pointless).

I would like to find something over 2 GHz, but realize processors are expensive ... so was hoping (pipe-dreaming, probably) to find something slightly used that would fit the bill.

Looks like your chipset is the GM965, socket p.

This is a list of socket P processors that will fit, but if they will work I don't know, had a quick look at the bios release notes for the aspire 9920g and it says penryn support so you may be able to use T9***, T8*** processors after a bios update:

    Core 2 Duo T7250 - 2.0 GHz, 2 Mb, 800 MHz, P
    Core 2 Duo T7300 - 2.0 GHz, 4 Mb, 800 MHz, P
    Core 2 Duo T8100 - 2.1 GHz, 3 Mb, 800 MHz, P
    Core 2 Duo T7500 - 2.2 GHz, 4 Mb, 800 MHz, P
    Core 2 Duo T7700 - 2.4 GHz, 4 Mb, 800 MHz, P
    Core 2 Duo T8300 - 2.4 GHz, 3 Mb, 800 MHz, P
    Core 2 Duo T7800 - 2.6 GHz, 4 Mb, 800 MHz, P
    Core 2 Extreme X7800 - 2.6 GHz, 4 Mb, 800 MHz, P
    Core 2 Duo T9300 - 2.5 GHz, 6 Mb, 800 MHz, P
    Core 2 Extreme X7900 - 2.8 GHz, 4 Mb, 800 MHz, P
    Core 2 Duo T9500 - 2.6 GHz, 6 Mb, 800 MHz, P
    Core 2 Extreme X9000 - 2.8 GHz, 6 Mb, 800 MHz, P

If i'm wrong with any of the above, I'm sure it will be corrected.

Where abouts are you, just looking on ebay.com and there are some T7500 going, slightly used for $60ish dollars, may be worth having a look there.

Just had another look on the bios notes and you can definitely use the T9500 and T9300 CPU's, as one of the fixes in the bios is audio lag when using the above CPU's.

What sort of price would you be willing to spend on a CPU??

On another point, what HDD do you have??

I wasn't looking to spend more than, say, $200 CDN (approx - but preferably less). This is provided I'm successful in my mobo replacement and my laptop springs back to life. I wasn't looking for the fastest processor, just one better than what I've got.

This laptop comes with 2x160G SATA drives.

For around $200 canadian, your probably looking at one of the T7*** cpu's as the best option.

May also be worth looking at upgrading the HDD's to 7200rpm drives if the ones in there are 5400rpm.

I was able to snag a T8300 off eBay for $200CAD - it really is a sweet little CPU.

Just make sure it's not an ES processor - that means Engineering Sample, and that means it may not be fully stable.
    This one looks good.

    hello,

Ia am new to this forum, this is my first post.

    Thanks for sharing your views.

I have this same laptop and also wants a new processor along with two other hard disks and some more ram.

bangert: how can you tell which processor works or not? you mean by reading in the bios description?

I would love buying the extreme X9000... do you think its compatible?

    thanks
