well...i seem to have stumbled onto a persisting problem with current Acer notebooks , which seems to me, is also extending to the netbook range

i bought my wife a netbook, as she specifically requested, thing is, on 3cell 3hrs are great, but it has begun to "tear" a lot in WINXP.....

background services...etc have been seen to

so i check out CPUID and lavalys.....both showing Proc working along at 800mhz....i have tried to change power profile in XP ..... and tried making a new one, but there is no way to reduce that tearing effect...... it feels a bit sluggish to me, i am going to add a 2G module (accepts Elipda 2G module from my HP DV5T) so some RAM along those lines is wha i am aiming for......

can anyone tell me how to stop/ allow the laptop to clock on OS load....cuz the 800mhz on the netbook is unacceptable.

    Welcome to Acer.
    Congratulation of buying Acer.
    Causes:
BIOS locking(enabled C1E in the BIOS, it should be turned off)
Windows XP(you're using XP?) does not have function to change the FID and VID in the Control panel>Power Option.
ePower Management malfunction or do not have ePower Management(this thing can control acer laptop processor speed).

    Solution:
    S1:
Install ePower Management(download it from acer ftp website).
Set it to MAX processor speed.

    S2:
    Download RMclock.
    D/L for RMclock, http://cpu.rightmark.org/download.shtml
    Guide on using RMclock, http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=235824
It is a undervoltage guide but it teaches how to use RMClock. Read it all!

thank you man, incidentally i am a great fan of Acer laptops, been using since the 4001WLMI, 5370, 6920G and now the AOD 150, great build, bang for buck, and above all they supply at the min. a 9600mGT in DDR3 (which unforuantely was out of stock when i went hunting for one and eventually had to get the DDR2 9600mGT in the DV5)

just by the way, this laptop never came with any ACER empowering utility, secondly i tried to enable RM clock, but it does not even begin to comprehend the Atom platform,

This is obvious. Because most laptop manufacturer have a lot of option disabled in the BIOS.
Izzit Atom core? RMclock does not support that. Bad news for you too, RMclock does not continue on updating/upgrading the RMclock(I have no clue why they do this).

ok ...update (i was away from an internet port...)

thank you DS, i not only got...the empowering utility all setup, but got that processor downclock issue resolved....now i wonder if you could help me with the last issue

at frst i thought that the tearing on this netbook, might hav been
    the proc (SOLVED NOW)
the RAM (upgraded to 2Gb 800)
background app. (i have minimized the mem footprint as best i can....but there is no such utility that should cause that much of tearing (the taskbar, any app. from maximizing to minimizing.....)
.....so is there any utility...... that i can use, (cuz none of the current apps. show any program tasking the processor to 100%...... )

    so any help?

Sorry I can't understand your language(maybe my weak english) and please explain it CLEARLY using simple and understandable English(no short form please).

Currently, it does sound like your system might be infected by viruses. Since you mentioned CPU usage 100%. I am not sure too. Anyway, are you sure your processor speed sucessfully raise back to optimal?

Screen tearing due to graphics (VGA) driver incorrectly install / not installed.
Try and download the graphics driver from Intel (more recent) or Acer Website

    nope did not help.....

    1) installed the latest 945GM display drivers..
    2) bios is UPDATED to 1.09 (latest for the AOD 150)

please do not tell me to format this thing.....

PS the drivers are the same for the chipset on both Acer and INtel's website

Why? It should come with a Recovery OEM DVD or a partition with a build-in Recovery OEM. It is best to do a format if the problems are freaking hard to solve.

    Solution 1:
    1st, download Kaspersky 2009 or 2010(trial only).
Install and update it. Scan your computer completely. Remember every parts.
If have virus, then just destroy it or move to vault.
    Download SuperAntispyware and Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware.
    Install them.
Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and SUPERAntiSpyware are on-demand scanner.
Both of them do not have Real Time Protection since they are free edition.
Thus, do some manual scanning. Yet, they can remove rogue and tough spywares.
If the problems still exist, it might not be virus infection anymore.

    Solution 2:
Do you have a back-up or a system restore point?
Just restore your laptop using either one of them.

    Solution 3:
I remember got a way to repair windows theme back to their original stat but I currently forgot the steps. Moreover, you're using Windows XP. Pain I am not so pro on XP. I think you should google and see. Type in something like, repair windows xp theme.
If all these 3 solution can't help you. See solution 4.

    Solution 4:
Format or you find a proer people to teach you how to fix it.
Reformat actually is a REAL problem solver. Any major problem could be solve easily by a re-installation of OS.

Yeah, I'd have to agree... I haven't had issues with performance on mine, so sounds like something went whacky on yours... Xp runs just fine with a standard install, so any tweaks you did either hurt it or sure didn't help. So, in that case, I always go with a reformat and reinstall... if that doesn't solve it, might be hardware related... either a failure or RAM upgrade problem, etc...

Should run XP just fine and effortlessly... I'm currently running Word, typing this in IE8, ripping a DVD to hard drive (using external DVD drive), and downloading a rather large file, all at once with no noticeable slowdown or tearing...

    Good luck!

thank you all, i will still try to find a way to fix this laptop once more, when i have a day o 2 off, if i can't ...well then reformat it is.....

interstingly, there is a power management tab under te 950GM application, which is grayed out, any idea if it is a permanent feature, or a bios upgrade has locked this out.....

and if you guys have access to newer much better drivers than from ACER's website, i'd be willing to have a go at those too

I have two Acer Netbook`s (original 8.9 inch 150 & 10 inch D250) and this is far from normal, as you have already performed a reinstall from the recovery partition I would be inclined to consider returning the system. The netbook will run XP easily without issues even when the CPU steps down to 800Mhz.

    1. Replace the memory with the original 1GB, insufficient memory is definitely not the issue. This just helps isolate the problem.

    2. Step back the BIOS, I found with my D250 that not all releases were stable on my machine and resulted in spontaneous reboots, as did several others. The solution was to use a older release, the later releases may have been aimed at a D250 with a small change in the hardware.

    3. look over at the Acer Aspire One forum they have a vast knowledge base on the Acer Netbook`s
